A sampler containing a sample material applied to a substrate with a cover over the sample material. Sample material is deposited on the substrate by spray depositing the sample material on the substrate, which causes the sample material particles to lie in a substantially flat orientation. To enable the spraying of a material, a slurry is formed by mixing the sample material with a suitable carrier. The carrier then evaporates, leaving the sample material on the substrate.

Method of applying sample material to a substrate

Chip-impalement spears for rotary cutters are provided in a rectangular shape with a single sharp bevelled edge along the top of the spears and adapted to be placed parallel to a roller of the rotary cutter. The spears are embedded in one roller and arranged so that their sharp edges will come into slight contact with an opposing roller. Properties of the spears, in particular, hardness, are selected to enable the spears to be rapidly bent over in use, forming a chip-retaining barb. Spears having this capability may be obtained by making transverse cuts across a cutting rule.

Chip impalement spears for rotary cutters

Apparatus for removing and disposing of scrap paper chips impaled on a roller rotating away from the cutting region of a rotary cutter has a pneumatic baffle plate located a distance of 3/8 to 11/2 inches away from the roller, defining a narrow flow channel through which an air stream is sucked by a centrifugal fan. The baffle is spaced apart from the roller a distance such as to impart a high velocity to the air stream due to aerodynamic effects, causing chips to be forcibly removed from the roller when the chips reach an area above the flow channel. The baffle along with a chute that supports it and duct leading to the fan provide an enclosed channel for movement of the chips. The baffle edge adjacent the roller is provided with a curved surface to provide smooth flow of the air stream. The output of the fan has an air duct connected for conveying the chips to disposal.
