A coated cutting tool includes a coating and a substrate. The substrate is at least partly coated with a 4-10 &#x3bc;m thick coating comprising two adjacent Ti(C,N)-layers where the difference (&#x394;) between the residual stress state of the inner layer and the residual stress state of the outer layer is 1000 MPa&#x2266;&#x394;&#x2266;2500 MPa, on at least a part of the cutting edge and/or on at least a part of the rake face. A method to produce such a difference between the residual stress states is also disclosed.

Coated cutting tool insert

The invention relates to a method of producing a cutting tool at least partly coated with an inner CVD coating and an outer PVD coating comprising the manufacturing steps of depositing the CVD coating, subjecting the CVD coating at least partly to an intensive wet-blasting operation, followed by depositing the PVD coating. The invention also relates to a coated cutting tool comprising a cemented carbide substrate of 5-14 wt-% Co, 0-8 wt-% cubic carbides of Ti, Ta or Nb or a combination thereof, and balance WC, said substrate being at least partly coated with a 4-14 &#x3bc;m thick coating comprising an inner CVD coating and an outer PVD coating wherein the CVD coating has compressive stresses.

Coated cutting tool

The present invention relates to a CVD-coated cutting tool insert with a TiCN-layer with a low tensile stress level of from about 50 to about 390 MPa and an &#x3b1;-AlO-layer with a high surface smoothness with a mean Ra&#x3c;0.12 &#x3bc;m as measured by AFM-technique. This is obtained by subjecting the coating to an intensive wet blasting operation.

The present invention discloses a coated cutting tool insert particularly useful for dry and wet machining, preferably milling, in low and medium alloyed steels, stainless steels, with or without raw surface zones under severe conditions such as vibrations, long overhang and recutting of chips. The insert is characterized by WC&#x2014;Co cemented carbide with a W and Cr alloyed Co-binder phase and a coating including at least three TiCNOlayers and a top layer at least on the rake face of a smooth &#x3b1;-AlO.

A CVD-coated cutting tool insert with a TiCN-layer with a low tensile stress level of 10-300 MPa and an &#x3b1;-AlO-layer with a high surface smoothness of &#x3c;0.1 &#x3bc;m as measured by AFM-technique is disclosed. This is obtained by subjecting the coating to a first intensive wet blasting operation with a slurry of F80 grits of AlOfollowed by a second wet blasting treatment with a slurry of F320 grits of AlO.

There is disclosed a coated cutting insert particularly useful for cutting in cast iron materials. The insert is characterized by a straight WC-Co cemented carbide body having a highly W-alloyed Co binder phase, a well-defined surface content of Co and a coating including an innermost layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains, a layer of a fine-grained, textured AlOlayer and a top layer of TiCNOthat has been removed along the cutting edge line.

Coated cutting insert

A coated turning insert particularly useful for turning in stainless steel is disclosed. The insert is characterized by a WC&#x2014;Co-based cemented carbide substrate having a highly W-alloyed Co-binder phase and a coating including an inner layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains followed by a layer of fine-grained, &#x3ba;-AlOand a top layer of TiN. The layers are deposited by using CVD methods.

Coated turning insert and method of making it

A coated milling insert particularly useful for milling in low and medium alloyed steels with or without raw surface zones during wet or dry conditions. The insert is characterized by a WC-Co cemented carbide with a low content of cubic carbides and a highly W alloyed binder phase and a coating including an inner layer of TiCNOwith columnar grains, a layer of &#x3ba;-AlOand, preferably, a top layer of TiN. The layers are deposited by using CVD methods.

Coated milling insert and method of making it

According to the present invention there is provided a body at least partially coated with one or more refractory layers of which at least one layer essentially consist of &#x3b1;-AlO. Said &#x3b1;-AlOlayer consists of essentially equiaxed grains with an average grain size of &#x3c;1 &#x3bc;m and with a bimodal grain size distribution with coarser grains with an average grainsize in the interval 0.5-1 &#x3bc;m and finer grains with an average grainsize of &#x3c;0.5 &#x3bc;m. The AlOlayer further contains striated zones containing titanium (&#x3e;5 at %) but no nitrogen or carbon. This particular microstructure is obtained by temporarily stopping the gases needed for the growth of the AlOlayer and introducing TiCl.

Oxide coated cutting tool

A body is at least partially coated with one or more refractory layers of which at least one layer is of a fine grained &#x3ba;-AlO. Said &#x3ba;-AlOlayer has equiaxed grains with an average grain size of &#x3c;0.5 &#x3bc;m. The AlOlayer also has at least one sublayer containing Al, Si and O. The fine grained &#x3ba;-AlOmicrostructure is obtained by periodically introducing a silicon halide, preferably SiCl, during the AlO-process.
