A peritoneal dialysis ('PD') system includes a housing; a PD fluid pump housed by the housing; a filter set including a filter housing and a hydrophilic filter membrane dividing an upstream chamber from a downstream chamber; a dual lumen patient line including a fresh PD fluid lumen in fluid communication with the upstream chamber and a used PD fluid lumen in fluid communication with the downstream chamber; a pressure sensor positioned and arranged to provide a pressure sensor output indicative of pressure in the downstream chamber of the filter housing; and a control unit configured to perform a pressure integrity test on the hydrophilic filter membrane by monitoring the pressure sensor output over a period of time, the pressure sensor output indicative of a negative pressure created in the downstream chamber by the PD fluid pump. A pressure drop test for evaluating the filter membrane is also disclosed.

Dialysis system having filter testing

A system and a method for renal replacement therapy includes a blood treatment unit connected to a blood circuit and a dialysis fluid circuit, the system further including a control unit configured to control the system according to control instructions during a treatment, so as to determine a system parameter value and an indication of membrane fouling of the membrane, and activate an automatic anti-fouling measure that includes a temporary change of the flow rate in the blood circuit and a temporary decrease of the ultrafiltration rate wherein a timing of the temporary change and a timing of the temporary reduction are synchronized.

System and a method for renal replacement therapy

An extracorporeal therapy system includes: (i) a dialysis fluid circuit including dialysis fluid preparation structure to prepare a dialysis fluid for treatment, the dialysis fluid circuit including a fresh dialysis fluid pump, a used dialysis fluid pump, and at least one filter for purifying the dialysis fluid; (ii) a blood circuit including a blood filter for use during the treatment; (iii) a blood pump operable to pump blood through the blood circuit and blood filter; (iv) a source of disinfecting fluid; and (v) a control unit operable with the dialysis fluid preparation structure and the blood pump, the control unit programmed to cause the disinfecting fluid to be delivered to and located for a duration at an area of the dialysis fluid circuit having the at least one purifying filter, and wherein during the duration the disinfecting fluid is precluded from contacting at least the fresh dialysis fluid pump.

Dialysis system having localized disinfection

A control system is configured to implement a method of preparing a blood treatment apparatus () for blood treatment. The method comprises installing, by use of a disposable arrangement, first and second flow circuits (C, C) separated by a semi-permeable membrane (), the first flow circuit (C) being connected for fluid communication with the apparatus () and the second flow circuit (C) being connected to form a closed loop that includes a sterilizing filter () and, optionally, a container (). The method further comprises performing backfiltration to transfer a human-compatible fluid from the first flow circuit (C) to the second flow circuit (C) through the semi-permeable membrane (), and circulating () the human-compatible fluid in the closed loop of second flow circuit (C), to thereby sterilize the human-compatible fluid by the sterilizing filter () and, optionally, collect a resulting sterile fluid in the container () for later use.

Preparing an extracorporeal blood treatment apparatus

A dialysis machine configured to carry out a method and a method for draining an extracorporeal fluid circuit utilizing a dialysis machine, wherein the dialysis machine is connected to a dialyzer and said extracorporeal fluid circuit, said extracorporeal fluid circuit comprising an arterial line connectable to a patient, for drawing blood from the patient and a venous line connectable to the patient for returning blood to the patient, the method comprising: after treatment termination from said extracorporeal fluid circuit draining remaining fluid from said extracorporeal fluid circuit through the dialyzer.

Dialysis machine and method

A control device for a blood treatment machine performs a connection test () by causing the blood treatment machine to switch () between a first and a second operating state by reversing a blood pump so as to change a flow direction of blood through both a dialyzer and access devices connected to a patient. Based on an output signal of at least one sensor in the blood treatment machine (), the control device computes () an efficiency change parameter that represents a change in in-vivo clearance of the blood treatment machine during the switch of the blood treatment machine between the first and second operating states. The control device evaluates () the efficiency change parameter to jointly detect connection errors at the dialyzer, resulting in co-current flow of treatment fluid and blood through the dialyzer, and at the access devices, resulting in access recirculation of blood.

Connection test for blood treatment machines

The filter device () comprises a housing () having a first end () and a second end () and defining a fluid chamber () extending between the first end () and the second end (). Still further, the filter device () comprises a fourth fluid port () and a fifth fluid port () both provided at the fluid chamber () and located between the first longitudinal end of the first sealing means () and the second longitudinal end of the second sealing means ().

Filter device, system and method for filtration of fluids

Method and device for monitoring the flow speed of an infusion solution, such as with hemofiltration or hemodiafiltration. The device has a tube for conducting an infusion solution from a source of infusion solution to a pump device in the form of a metering pump, such as a peristaltic pump or a ceramic pump, and on to an infusion device, such as a drip chamber. The flow speed is determined by the metering pump. The flow speed is monitored separately in that the pressure across a restriction device in the tube is measured. The restriction device can be a separately arranged restriction valve. Alternatively the restriction device is arranged by the tube having a small internal diameter of the order of 0.5 mm in size. The pressure measuring device only needs to measure the absolute pressure with respect to the atmosphere. The hydrostatic pressure due to the infusion bag being hung above the pump and the pressure meter is subtracted in a calculation device.
