A rear axle suspension for a highway truck that includes a pair of trailing arms suspended below a frame by a pair of hanger brackets. The hanger brackets define a pivot axis for the trailing arms. A supplemental axle locating member is attached to the axle and includes an extension member that is engageable with a bracket held by the frame. The hanger brackets are laterally compliant and each comprise an inner and outer plate, one of which is bent outwardly to define a gap within which an associated trailing arm is mounted. A moment canceling member extends between the hanger brackets and resists outward bending of the brackets. A height control valve is operated by an operating rod having an axis that passes through, or in close proximity, to the roll center of the vehicle in order to reduce ride height errors.

Suspension

An axle suspension arrangement for rigid axles in vehicles with a frame having a pair of longitudinal beams. The suspension arrangement includes at least one first longitudinal control arm extending substantially in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, each longitudinal control arm being connected to the vehicle by a first pivotal joint and being connected to the vehicle axle by a second pivotal joint. The arrangement further includes a second longitudinal control arm connected to the vehicle by a third pivotal joint and connected to the vehicle axle by a fourth pivotal joint, the control arms being arranged on each side of the vehicle approximately at the same level, positioned above the first control arm, and a stabilizer bar counteracting lateral tilting movements of the axle. The stabilizer bar is arranged directly between and fixedly attached to the second longitudinal control arms at its ends. There is further disclosed a vehicle provided with such an axle suspension.

Vehicle suspension arrangement and vehicle provided with such a suspension

Spring suspension for interconnecting an axle to the frame of a commercial, land-based and wheeled vehicle. An end support for an axle is included that has a cantilever spring interconnected by an interposed axle holder to an air-spring bridge. The cantilever spring extends forwardly; that is, toward the front end of the incorporating vehicle, from the axle holder. Oppositely, the bridge extends rearwardly from the axle holder. The forwardly extending cantilever spring elongately extends between two terminal ends thereof. These two ends constitute a front frame-secured end and a back axle holder-secured end. The rearwardly projecting bridge extends between its own two terminal ends, and constitutes a front axle holder-secured end and a back air-spring secured end. The front frame secured end of the cantilever spring is distantly positioned away from the back air-spring supported end of the bridge member. In comparison, the back axle holder-secured end of the cantilever spring is less distantly positioned from the front axle holder-secured end of the bridge.

Vehicular spring suspension

A method and apparatus for controlling frame rise on a heavy duty truck having a frame, a drive axle connected to the frame, and a selectively lockable suspension component disposed therebetween for maintaining the relative position therebetween. Signals indicative of at least one of the following vehicle operating parameters: engine speed, brake pressure, vehicle speed, air bag pressure, steering wheel angle, vehicle height, or throttle position are monitored and a predicted thrust is calculated that will be applied to the drive axle based on the monitored signals. The selectively lockable suspension component is locked if the predicted thrust exceeds a predetermined threshold and is also controlled with respect to other operating parameters such as whether vehicle brakes are applied, any instantaneous change in torque, vehicle operating speed, and the length of time the selectively lockable suspension component has been locked.

Locking suspension system

A method for controlling the ride height in a suspension of an over the highway truck or tractor based on rear axle load. A load on the rear axle is measured. An optimum ride height is calculated at core response to correct drive lighted angles based on the rear axle load. The actual ride height is measured. The difference between the optimum ride height and the actual ride height is calculated. A component of the suspension, such as an air spring, is adjusted to adjust the actual ride height to a height closer to the optimum ride height.

Electronic height control

A method and apparatus for adaptively damping relative motion between the wheels and the frame of a heavy duty truck having a frame suspended on wheels by a suspension system. An air spring is disposed between the frame and at least one of the wheels having a primary reservoir for holding air and a piston adapted to act upon the air in the reservoir to compress the air and thereby provide support for the frame. An auxiliary reservoir holds air and can be placed in fluid communication with the primary reservoir to increase an effective volume of air upon which the piston acts. A control valve selectively places the auxiliary reservoir in communication with the primary reservoir based on vehicle operating parameters. The control valve can be actuated mechanically by forces acting on the wheels or by a controller that controls the valve based on wheel torque and road roughness.

Air spring stiffness controller

A bracket formed from a single piece of sheet material for use in suspension of a vehicle for inhibiting relative lateral movement between and axle and a frame of the vehicle. The bracket includes a first portion bent to form a sleeve for insertion of a first fastener used to mount a first end of a torque rod. A second portion of the sheet material is bent to form a second sleeve for insertion of a second fastener used to mount the first end of the torque rod. A base portion is formed from the sheet material for mounting the bracket to the axle of the vehicle. The base portion maintains the first sleeve and the second sleeve in a spaced apart relationship for mounting an end of the torque rod.

Torque rod bracket

In an over the highway vehicle, a frame including a pair of elongate frame rails and a plurality of cross members is disclosed. One of the rails includes an integrally formed bracket projecting laterally. The bracket is adjacent a rail aperture formed by cutting the one rail to define the bracket and after such cutting bending the bracket out of a plane of the one rail.

Heavy duty vehicle frame

An over the highway truck having a power steering system including an improved hydraulic circuit for operation of the system is disclosed. The system includes a heat conductive metal frame element, a power steering pump, and conduits connecting an output of the pump to at least one steering assist actuator. The system also has a heat conductive, metal, hydraulic reservoir defining an internal power steering fluid chamber is connected to the frame element in heat transfer relationship. Supply and return conduits respectively connect the chamber to the pump and the actuator to provide a combination wherein the frame element and reservoir together function as a heat sink to cool power steering fluid. The reservoir has a housing having a base portion and an internally connected, upstanding, circumferentially endless side portion. The housing has flow directing passages adjacent its base portion and communicating with the chamber for delineating fluid flow across the base portion in heat transferring relationship. A process of maintaining power steering fluid at desired temperatures by circulating fluid through a reservoir in heat exchange relationship with the frame element, thereby causing the reservoir and element to function as a heat sink is also disclosed.

Highway truck with power steering system and a method of operation

A juvenile vehicle is demonstrated herein which is powered by unwinding a cable from a continuous stepped drum. In the preferred form of the vehicle the cable is unwound and the drum rotates at a faster and faster speed thus causing the vehicle to rapidly accelerate. The preferred method demonstrates the steps of winding the cable on the drum and imparting external power to the cable to thereby cause the drum to rotate.
