A method for detecting wheels of a vehicle on a road comprises directing a vehicle classification sensor onto a section of the road and recording a 3D representation of the vehicle, directing a camera onto the section and recording a source 2D image, determining a bounding box circumscribing the 3D representation, a side and four corner points of said bounding box side, identifying corner points in a source 2D image plane, defining four corner points of a rectangle in a destination 2D image plane, calculating a projective transformation between the source corner image points and the destination corner image points, transforming source 2D image pixels to destination 2D image pixels of a first destination 2D image, and detecting the wheels using the destination 2D image.

An apparatus for recording license plates of vehicles travelling on a road having several adjacent lanes comprises a vehicle classification sensor configured to detect a predetermined shape characteristic of a vehicle or group of vehicles. The apparatus further comprises at least one camera mounted at an elevated point beside one of the lanes and having an angle of aperture covering at least one of said lanes, each lane covered by at least one camera. The vehicle classification sensor is configured to, upon detecting the predetermined shape characteristic on a lane, trigger the camera that covers the lane the predetermined shape characteristic is detected on to record an image of a license plate on the back of the vehicle or group's leading vehicle, respectively, for which the predetermined shape characteristic is detected. The triggered camera is of a lane either adjacent to or at least one lane apart from the lane.

A method of measuring a height of a vehicle on a road comprises recording with a vehicle classification sensor a 3D representation of the vehicle passing the section and recording with a camera a 2D image of at least an upper portion of the vehicle and a background; determining an edge profile between the upper portion and the background establishing a fan of rays each extending from the elevated point and through a different one of multiple points along the edge profile; shifting the 3D representation in the coordinate system in height until it is tangent to said fan; and determining said height of the vehicle from the shifted 3D representation in the coordinate system. The disclosed subject matter further relates to an apparatus for performing this method.

A tolling station for tolling vehicles of different classes comprises an entrance section, a tolling section, and an intermediate section. The tolling section comprises a gate for each tolling lane and the entrance section comprises at least one classification device to link an identifier to a determined class. The tolling station further comprises a tracking device configured to track vehicles moving through the intermediate section and to pass the vehicle's identifier to the respective gate the vehicle exits to. Each gate is configured to toll, or let pass, a vehicle based on the class linked to the identifier.

The present disclosure relates to a method of controlling a traffic surveillance system. The method comprises the steps of: capturing first images and second images over time by a plurality of the stereoscopic sensors; processing, by the processing unit, a first image and a second image from a first stereoscopic sensor of the plurality of the stereoscopic sensors to produce a first height image; analyzing said first height image to detect a moving object such as a vehicle located within the primary view; and analysing a part of a primary view of at least a first image, a second image or a combination of the first image and the second image captured by a second stereoscopic sensor based on the detected moving object in said first height image to determine a characteristic of the moving object.

Method of controlling a traffic surveillance system

A method for identifying contamination upon a lens of a stereoscopic camera is disclosed. The stereoscopic camera is arranged such that it has the same capturing area over time, and is provided with a first camera providing first images of said capturing area and a second camera providing second images of said capturing area. The first and second images are divided into at least one evaluation area correspondently located in respective image. A traffic surveillance system is also disclosed where contamination upon a lens of a stereoscopic camera is identified according to said method.

A method for shadow detection in an image comprising multiple color channels is disclosed wherein said image is compared with a background image. Said image and said background image comprises the same multiple color channels, have an exposure of a common background and are divided into a plurality of corresponding evaluation areas. For each combination of two color channels, a shadow region is defined in the two-dimensional coordinate system spanned by the two color channels. For each image evaluation area to be evaluated and for each combination of two color channels, the method comprises checking if a difference value between a first value pair defining values of said two color channels in the image evaluation area and a second value pair defining the values of said two color channels in the corresponding background evaluation area falls within said shadow region in said coordinate system.
