The present invention relates to a method for beamforming a beam using an active antenna having predetermined aperture data predetermined aperture data comprising M&#xd7;N dual polarized antenna subarrays within an aperture, each dual polarized antenna subarray comprising a first antenna subarray having a first polarization and a second antenna subarray having a second polarization non-parallel with the first polarization. The method comprises: selecting number of antenna ports, each antenna port being adapted to generate a separate beam using a combination from the first antenna subarray and/or the second antenna subarray; selecting port properties, comprising target beamwidth for each separate beam and desired polarization between beams; and determining port partitioning based upon aperture data and port properties for each antenna port, to adjust an effective length of the aperture over which the beam is created and thereby defining which first antenna subarray(s) and/or second antenna subarray(s) to use for each antenna port.

Method for beamforming a beam using an active antenna

The present invention relates to a method for detecting a number of user terminals (), each of said user terminals () comprising a receiver unit (), a transmitter unit () and a control unit () arranged to control said receiver unit () and transmitter unit (), each of said user terminals () also being associated with a wireless communication network () comprising a plurality of network cells (), each being equipped with a node (). The method comprises detecting () communication between each of said user terminals () and an associated node () of said wireless communication network (). Furthermore, the method comprises: detecting () a first control message being transmitted from a user terminal (); detecting () a second control message being transmitted from a node (), said second control message being associated with the first control message; and increasing () a counter () representing said number of user terminals () based on detection of transmission of said control messages. Method and device for detecting a number of user terminals

A node for use in a wireless communication system comprising at least two Tx-chains and at least two Rx-chains is provided. A first means for a switch and filter network function MSN is arranged across all Tx-chains. The first MSN is arranged to output one antenna sector signal comprising: a radio sector signal, or a split radio sector signal, the splitting of a radio sector signal allowing one radio sector signal to feed sector antennas in more than one sector, each sector having at least one sector antenna. The first or a second MSN can also be arranged across Rx-chains. Further, a method to reduce power consumption in a node and a wireless communication system comprising the node is provided.

Adaptive filtering architecture

The technology involves data processing during intra-site handover procedures. At least two directional antennas of a base station receive data carrying signals originating from a mobile units positioned in an intra-site handover area defined by the overlapping radio coverage of the antennas. The directional antennas performs an initial data signal detection of the received data signals resulting in detected data, which typically results in a loss of radio performance of the antenna. The detected data from the directional antennas is then processed to generate processed data. The performance loss is compensated by providing differential antenna gain of the directional antennas within the handover area.

Data processing in intra-site handover

A method is provided for using an antenna array to create two beams (a first beam and a second beam). In one aspect, the method uses dual polarization beam forming, which allows for many degrees of freedom in designing a desired power pattern. The method is well suited for systems with multiple radio chains (e.g., systems with active antennas). The method is also well suited for multi-port systems such as TD-SCDMA. In some embodiments, the method produces two beams where (a) the shape of the power beam pattern for the first beam and the shape of the power beam pattern for the second beam are the same (or substantially the same) in a plurality of directions of interest and (b) the beams have orthogonal (or substantially orthogonal) polarizations in the coverage area.

Beamforming methods and apparatuses

The present invention relates to a communication unit, network and method for communication within a communication network, the unit comprising a transceiver portion, a processing unit and at least one interface arrangement for communication with at least one peripheral device. The unit further comprises an arrangement for transceiving at least parts of a signal to the communication network using at least one of said interface arrangements for communication with said at least one peripheral device.

Virtual multiple antenna (VMAT)

As a result, a similar radio coverage in this area as prior art solutions is obtained but with a less complex antenna-related design.

A wireless telecommunications system for stationary or semi-stationary equipment includes a main node and a first plurality of terminals belonging to the same access subset and arranged to receive from and transmit to the main node. The main node transmits in at least one beam and receives in at least two beams, and the system indicates to the terminals that they may or may not transmit to the central node. Based upon certain criteria, two or more terminals located in different receive beams of the main node may be given permission to transmit to the central node simultaneously. Suitably, two or more terminals which are given permission to transmit simultaneously do so using the same frequency, or the same code, or the same time slot.

Wireless telecommunications system with improved transmission capacity

The present invention relates to an omnidirectional base station antenna arrangement with a number of antenna elements and a number of transceiver means for transmitting and receiving signals to/from a number of user stations. A feeding network is provided which comprises a number of phase ports, a number of which form first phase ports connected to a number of transceiver means for downlink communication and a number of which form second phase ports connected to a number of transceiver means for uplink communication. The feeding network comprises a number of antenna ports connected to antenna elements and the feeding network generates substantially independent, orthogonal signals to provide for phase diversity and the antenna elements are arranged to form at least one cylindrical array antenna. The invention also relates to a method of providing communication between an omnidirectional base station antenna arrangement with a number of antenna elements and a number of transceiver means and a number of user stations as well as to a method of providing for at least phase diversity transmission at an omnidirectional base station antenna arrangement.
