1. The use of a compound of the general formula ##STR1## in which n is 0 or 1

Nitromethylene compounds of general formula ##STR1## wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, R.sup.1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group, n is 0 or 1, and Het represents an optionally substituted 3-pyridyl, 4-pyridyl or 5-isoxazolyl group, processes for their preparation, and their use as insecticides, are described.

Nitromethylene compounds

A herbicidal composition which comprises at least one carrier and, as active ingredient, a compound of the general formula ##STR1## in which each of n and m independently is 0 or 1; each of Ar.sup.1 and Ar.sup.2 independently is an aryl group, at least one of Ar.sup.1 and Ar.sup.2 being substituted by one or more of the same or different substituents selected from halogen atoms, alkyl groups, alkoxy groups, haloalkyl groups and haloalkoxy groups; and R.sup.1 is hydrogen, or an alkyl, alkylthio or haloalkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a halogen atom provided that at least one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represents a hydrogen atom. Certain compounds of formula I are novel.

Compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or alkyl;

Pesticidal compounds

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein X.sup.1, X.sup.2 and X.sup.3 each independently represents hydrogen, halogen or alkyl; n is 0 or 1; Z represents hydrogen or halogen or an amino, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkylthio or alkoxy group or a phenoxy group optionally substituted by haloalkyl; A represents CH or N; Y.sup.1 and ZY.sup.2 each independently represents hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, alkoxy or haloalkoxy; and W represents hydrogen or, when A is CH and at least one of Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 is not hydrogen or when A is N, hydrogen or halogen; with the proviso that when A represents N, then each of Y.sup.1 and Y.sup.2 represents hydrogen, have herbicidal properties. The invention also provides a process for their preparation and their use as herbicides.
