Systems and methods of the present disclosure are directed to systems and methods for controlling a wellbore drilling apparatus where the system may include a surface controller and a downhole controller. In certain instances, control of the drilling apparatus may be transferred from the surface controller to the downhole controller. The control of the drilling apparatus may be transferred to the downhole controller as the surface control monitors operation of the drilling operation. The surface controller may also send a command that transfers control of the drilling apparatus from the downhole controller to the surface controller.

Closed loop fully autonomous directional drilling

A method includes obtaining, by a downhole tool, a first shape of sensor data representing one or more characteristics of a wellbore, comparing, by the downhole tool, the first shape with a set of pre-determined reference shapes stored in a downhole memory to select a pre-determined reference shape that can be imposed on the first shape, calculating one or more delta values between the first shape and the selected pre-determined reference shape, and transmitting, by the downhole tool, the pre-determined reference shape and the delta values to a processor at a surface of the wellbore.

Methods for data compression and optimization for downhole telemetry

This disclosure presents a process for communications in a borehole containing a fluid or drilling mud, where a conventional mud pulser can be utilized to transmit data to a transducer. The transducer, or a communicatively coupled computing system, can perform pre-processing steps to correct the received data using an average of a moving time window of the received data, and then normalize the corrected data. The corrected data can then be utilized as inputs into a machine learning mud pulse recognition network where the data can be classified and an ideal or clean pulse waveform can be overlaid the corrected data. The overlay and the corrected data can be fed into a conventional decoder or decoded by the disclosed process. The decoded data can then be communicated to another system and used as inputs, such as to a well site controller to enable adjustments to well site operation parameters.

Machine learning mud pulse recognition networks

A method including receiving a waveform, identifying the presence of a pulse in the waveform, and subtracting a reflection template from the received waveform when a pulse is present in the waveform to obtain a corrected waveform, is presented. The method may further include reading the corrected waveform using a digital processing protocol and adjusting a drilling parameter according to the reading. A device configured to perform a method as above is also provided. A method as above, further including modifying a drilling parameter in a wellbore based on the reading of a pulse sequence including the waveform is also provided.

A system for channel sounding and initializing an equalizer using a frequency hopping sounder signal. The system identifies a frequency range for sounding a channel between a first device at a first location within a wellbore and a second device at a second location within the wellbore. Center frequencies, bandwidths, and timeframes are assigned to each of a plurality of sounding sequences, such that an entirety of the frequency range is assigned to the plurality of sounding sequences, and wherein when played in order according to the timeframe assigned to each sounding sequence in the plurality of sounding sequences, a sounding signal having a non-contiguous frequency is produced. By comparing an attenuated sounding signal based on the sounding signal to the sounding signal, the system estimates a transfer function of the channel. The system also initializes the equalizer based on the comparison.

The specification discloses algorithms for error recovery in pulse position modulation-based mud pulse telemetry. More particularly, the specification discloses detection and attempted correction of at least five possible error mechanisms: the missed detection of a pulse that creates an interval greater than maximum; the missed detection of a pulse that results in an interval still within acceptable boundaries; detection of an extra pulse; a pulse shift that results in data in contiguous intervals being affected; and a pulse shift resulting in a single interval data corruption.

Data recovery for pulse telemetry using pulse position modulation

A downlink telemetry system providing improved apparatus and methods for communicating instructions via pressure pulses from surface equipment to a downhole assembly. The apparatus comprises a surface transmitter for generating pressure pulses, a control system, and a downhole receiver for receiving and decoding pulses. In operation, a bypass valve is opened and closed to create a series of pressure pulses received and decoded by a downhole receiver. The method significantly reduces the time required for downlink communication without interrupting drilling and without interrupting uplink communications such that simultaneous, bi-directional communication is achievable if the uplink and downlink signals are sent at different frequencies. The telemetry scheme and algorithm provide an inventive method for filtering and decoding the downlink signals. The algorithm determines the time intervals between pulse peaks and decodes the intervals into an instruction. The algorithm also includes error checking for verifying that the instruction was properly received downhole.

Downlink telemetry system

A mud pulse telemetry technique that uses a number of bits per interval based on parameters of the pulse position modulation system in order to reduce data transfer time in a pulse position modulation system. More particularly, depending on parameters of the pulse position modulation such as the minimum-time and the bit-width, it may be possible to decrease overall transmission time by splitting values having a larger number of bits into multiple transmissions with each transmission having a smaller number of bits.
