Various implementations include in-ear wearable audio devices. In certain implementations, the in-ear audio devices include an eartip with a body having first and second ends, an inner wall extending between the first and second ends defining a hollow passage to conduct acoustic energy, and a deformable outer wall connected to the inner wall of the body at the first end and tapering away from the inner wall toward the second end, where the deformable outer wall is functionally graded from the first end to the second end to comply with an entrance of an ear canal of a user. In additional implementations, the eartip includes a retaining structure, and at least one of the inner wall or the outer wall of the body, or the retaining structure, has an integral electronic component and/or an electronic component signal trace.

Various implementations include seats and related systems for detecting user proximity and controlling one or more functions based on that proximity detection. In particular cases, the seats include capacitive sensors for detecting user proximity. In some particular aspects, an automobile seat includes: a core section; a cover over at least a portion of the core section, the cover having a set of capacitive sensors across a front of the seat; and a processor for processing signals from the set of capacitive sensors to detect a proximity of a user.

A wearable audio system with a first active portion that in its normal use position is carried on a user's body on a first side of the mid-sagittal plane and a second active portion that in its normal use position is carried on the user's body on a second side of the mid-sagittal plane. Sound is transmitted from one active portion and received at the other active portion. The received sound is used to estimate whether the active positions are in their use positions.

At least one of the first and second portions of the body are configured to change shape upon application of a predetermined stimulus. An acoustic module is carried by the body and is configured to locate a sound-emitting opening proximate the user's ear when the body is worn on or abutting the ear of the user.

A loudspeaker includes an acoustic diaphragm, an oscillatory force source, a lever coupling the oscillatory force source to the acoustic diaphragm, and a pivot coupled to the lever such that the lever moves in an arcuate path about the pivot when the oscillatory force source applies a force to the lever. The pivot includes at least one torsion bushing. The at least one torsion bushing includes a first member, a second member coupled to the lever and movable relative to the first member, and an elastomeric member coupling the first member to the second member. Either the first member or the second member is coupled to and moves with the lever. An outer surface of the elastomeric member is coupled to the second member via mechanical compression.

A method of controlling a personal acoustic device includes generating a first electrical signal responsive to an acoustic signal incident at a microphone disposed at a location on an earpiece of the personal acoustic device such that the microphone is acoustically coupled to an environment external to the earpiece. A characteristic of a transfer function based on the first electrical signal and a second electrical signal provided to a speaker in the earpiece is determined. An operating state of the personal acoustic device is determined form the characteristic of the transfer function. The operating state include a state in which the earpiece is positioned in the vicinity of an ear of a user and a second state in which the earpiece is absent from the vicinity of the ear of the user.

A method of controlling a personal acoustic device includes generating a first electrical signal responsive to an acoustic signal incident at a microphone disposed on an earpiece of the personal acoustic device. A characteristic of a transfer function based on the first electrical signal and a second electrical signal provided to a speaker in the earpiece is determined. An operating state of the personal acoustic device is determined form the characteristic of the transfer function. The operating state include a state in which the earpiece is positioned in the vicinity of an ear of a user and a second state in which the earpiece is absent from the vicinity of the ear of the user. Examples of a microphone that may be used include feedback and feedforward microphones in an acoustic noise reduction circuit.

A magnet carrier for a moving magnet actuator. The magnet carrier includes a single longitudinal beam extending in the direction of intended motion of magnet carrier and two pairs of transverse ribs, extending from opposite sides of the longitudinal beam. The longitudinal beam and the two pairs of transverse ribs are arranged to engage a pair of substantially planar magnets. The single longitudinal beam and the two pairs of transverse ribs each comprise a lip for engaging a chamfered edge of a pair of substantially planar magnets so that the lip opposes motion of the magnets in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the magnets. The longitudinal beam and the transverse ribs are adhered to the magnets by an adhesive with an elastic modulus of less than 5 MPa and a tensile strain of greater than 100%.
