In aspects of managing FTM frames of WLAN RTT bursts, a device can receive a WLAN RTT burst, such as initiated by a device application, device firmware, or received as a RTT ranging request. The device implements a status module that interposes the routing of the ranging request in the device, and determines a device state of the device with a device state monitor of the status module. The status module is implemented to drop the ranging request if the device is an idle device state such that the ranging request is extraneous. Alternatively, the status module is implemented to reduce a number of FTM frames in the ranging request based on the device state indicating that multiple FTM frames of the ranging request are extraneous, and then route to perform the ranging request of the WLAN RTT burst with the reduced number of FTM frames in the ranging request.

Managing FTM frames of WLAN RTT bursts

Techniques for pillar location for a mobile device are described, and may be implemented via a mobile device to identify frequently visited locations and to perform different tasks for the mobile device at the frequented locations. Generally, the described techniques enable a mobile device to generate precise representations of frequented locations known as 'pillar locations' without relying on conventional location determination techniques. Further, specific actions can be performed when the mobile device is detected at a pillar location, such as automatically unlocking the mobile device from a locked state.

In aspects of dropping extraneous discovery messages, a device application can initiate a discovery message in a device, such as a multicast message initiated for network discovery or discovery of network services. The device implements a status module that can interpose the routing of the discovery message in the device, and determine whether a response to a previous discovery message was received. The status module can also determine a device state of the device, where the device state can indicate whether a discovery message response is necessary. The status module is implemented to drop the discovery message if the response to the previous discovery message was not received and based on the device state indicating that a discovery message response is extraneous.

Various different types of computing devices include a modem that allows the computing device to communicate wirelessly with other devices using various different radio access technologies (RATs). During operation of the computing device, the modem scans for a cell to connect to using a particular RAT, and once found connects to the cell. The computing device also includes a modem scan management system that manages the modem scanning for a cell to connect to, controlling the modem's scanning for a cell to connect to, such as stopping scanning using a particular RAT or reducing the frequency of the scans until movement of the computing device by a significant amount is detected. In response to a significant amount of movement being detected, scanning using the particular RAT can resume or the frequency of the scans can be increased.

A method includes receiving an incoming biometric identification request on a first device from a user. First location data for the first device is determined. Second location data associated with at least one previous biometric identification request associated with the user is retrieved. A second level identification request is selectively initiated on the first device based on at least the first and second location data. A device includes a location module to determine first location data for the device, a biometric sensor to generate an incoming biometric identification request from a user, and a processor to retrieve second location data associated with at least one previous biometric identification request associated with the user and selectively initiate a second level identification request on the device based on at least the first and second location data.

A method and apparatus includes a communication device monitoring for an indication of presence with respect to the communication device. The method involves transmitting, when detecting the indication of presence, a first series of neighborhood awareness networking discovery beacon frames having a first interframe time interval. The method further involves transmitting, when not detecting the indication of presence, a second series of neighborhood awareness networking discovery beacon frames having a second interframe time interval that is longer than the first interframe time interval.

In embodiments of identification and suppression of network beacons, a wireless device scans for wireless network beacons and receives a beacon frame from a wireless network beacon. A computing device initiates wireless RTT ranging communication with a wireless device by specifying a source address (e.g., a MAC address or BSSID) of the wireless device in frames sent to the wireless device. The computing device performs wireless RTT ranging with less than all of the source addresses used by the wireless device because the distance between the computing device and the wireless device is the same regardless of which of the multiple source addresses the wireless device is using.

In aspects of homogeneous and heterogeneous system determination in a network, a device can receive a first management frame and a second management frame communicated in separate data messages using a common communication protocol. The device implements a system identification module that can detect the first and second management frames are communicated in data messages from a radio device. The system identification module can determine that the first and second management frames are communicated from a homogeneous system that includes the radio device based at least in part on source addresses included in the first and second management frames. The system identification module can then determine to associate with the homogeneous system based on an operational state of services associated with either the first or the second management frames.

The method further includes determining to perform neighborhood awareness networking scanning on behalf of the second communication device. When the first communication device detects a neighborhood awareness networking transmission while performing the neighborhood awareness networking scanning, it notifies the second communication device and discontinues the scanning on behalf of the second communication device.
