A controller for a multiphase switching converter has a voltage control circuit, a total current control circuit, a frequency divider and a plurality of sub control circuits. The voltage control circuit provides an on-time control signal based on an output voltage. The total current control circuit provides a current control signal based on a total current flowing through the plurality of switching circuits. The frequency divider receives the on-time control signal, and provides a plurality of frequency division signals based on the on-time control signal. The plurality of sub control circuits provides a plurality of switching control signals to control the plurality of switching circuits respectively. Each of the plurality of sub control circuits receives one of the plurality of frequency division signals and the current control signal, and provides one of the plurality of switching control signals.

Multiphase switching converter with total current limitation

A controller for a multiphase switching converter has a set generation circuit, a frequency divider, and a plurality of sub control circuits. The set generation circuit provides a set signal based on an output voltage and a total current flowing through the plurality of switching circuits. The frequency divider provides a plurality of frequency division signals based on the set signal. The plurality of sub control circuits provides a plurality of switching control signals to control the plurality of switching circuits respectively. Such that when the total current is larger than a current reference, one of the plurality of switching circuits maintains off temporarily, until the total current is less than the current reference, then the one of the plurality of switching circuits are turned on based on the output voltage and a voltage reference.

A voltage regulator provides an output voltage and an output current. The output voltage decreases with an increase of the output current when the output current is lower than a current breaking point, and the output voltage is maintained when the output current reaches the current breaking point.

A DC-DC converter with droop regulation for better transient performance. The DC-DC converter includes a switching circuit, a comparison circuit and a logic control circuit. A differential voltage indicative of an output voltage of the switching circuit, and a droop voltage indicative of an output current of the switching circuit, are generated. A high-pass filtered signal is obtained by high-pass filtering the droop voltage. The comparison circuit responds to the differential voltage, a reference voltage and the high-pass filtered signal to generate a set signal. The logic control circuit generates a control signal based on the set signal to control the switching circuit.

The control method includes: comparing a feedback signal with a reference signal to generate a comparison signal, wherein the feedback signal is indicative of an output voltage provided to the load; determining the number of switching circuits for power operation based on the load current; detecting a period of the comparison signal; comparing the detected period of the comparison signal with a time threshold to determine whether a transient rise of load current has occurred; and getting all the switching circuits into power operation if a transient rise of load current is detected.
