A location may be determined by accepting location information from at least two sources using at least two location technologies, for each set of location information from each source, adjusting the location information using at least one of (A) confidence in the source, (B) error range of the source, (C) an error model for the source, and (D) application-specific context information, and combining adjusted locations to generate a final location these location technologies assume a degree of cooperation. The location technologies may include a combination of a 'tag' that is placed on the object to be tracked, and one or more receivers/transmitters that work in concert with the tag to locate the object.

Determining a location or position using information from multiple location and positioning technologies and applications using such a determined location or position

Multipath signals (rays) emanating from an object of interest are processed to locate the object. Multipath signals may be accepted, screened, and associated with a specific object by an observer. Information (time, amplitude, and angle information) may be recorded for each ray. A set of incoming rays associated with a signal from an object are traced back toward the emanating object generating traceback ray segments. Candidate crossings of ray traceback segments are tested for time and/or amplitude consistency with ray information, and candidate crossings with inconsistent amplitude and/or time information may be eliminated from consideration. If there is only one candidate crossing remaining, it may be used to define the object location. Otherwise, the remaining crossings may be grouped, each grouping with a crossing cardinality, and location. Multiple crossings of multiple rays may be grouped into clusters with a cluster cardinality and diameter. The location may then be determined using crossing cardinality, cluster cardinality, and/or cluster diameter.

Locating an object of interest using back tracked-rays derived from multipath signals

A packet data filter which stores ordered rules and sequentially applies the rules to received data packets to determine the disposition of the data packet. The packet filter maintains a match count in memory which indicates the number of times each rule matched an incoming data packet. Periodically, at the initiation of a user, or based on operating parameters of the filter, the rules are automatically re-ordered based on the match count. As a result of the re-ordering, rules with higher match counts are moved earlier in the sequential evaluation order and rules with lower match counts are moved later in the sequential evaluation order. As such, rules which are more likely to match incoming data packets are evaluated earlier, thus avoiding the evaluation of later rules. In order to prevent a re-ordering which would change the overall security policy of the packet filter, pairs of rules are compared to determine if they conflict (i.e., the swapping of the two rules would result in a change in the overall security policy). During re-ordering, the swapping of conflicting rules is prevented.

Adaptive re-ordering of data packet filter rules

A network system receives incoming packets from multiple private networks with potentially conflicting Internet Protocol (IP) address spaces, and performs header and payload address translation operations to ensure that the IP address spaces of the incoming packets are made non-conflicting, such that the packets can be managed using a single network management platform. A router in the system receives the packets and performs Network Address Translation (NAT) on IP header information. Packets identified as being associated with a particular protocol, e.g., a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), are redirected by the router to a Management Payload Address Translator (MPAT) that applies a fast parsing process to the packet payloads to identify IP address-related information therein, and if necessary applies an appropriate translation of the identified information before routing the packets to a network management platform. The fast parsing process is an efficient object-based process which avoids the need to parse the entire packet payload.

Managing multiple private data networks using network and payload address translation

In a communication arrangement including a multiplicity of intranets, objects available on the Internet are requested. A requested object in an intranet is attended by a proxy server therein, which attempts to locate a copy of the requested object in a proxy cache. The latter stores copies of objects previously obtained by web browsers in the intranet, and affords priority to copies of those objects from selected Internet sites. If the proxy server does not manage to locate a copy of the requested object or determines that a located copy is outdated, the proxy server seeks cooperation from other proxy servers to further search for the object. These cooperating proxy servers are dynamically identified by a manager processor in accordance with the invention. In addition, the manager processor prefetches selected objects from the Internet in anticipation of the object request. The manager processor also helps search the prefetched objects for the requested object.

Technique for effectively managing proxy servers in intranets

An automated method for alerting a customer that a transaction is being initiated and for authorizing the transaction based on a confirmation/approval by the customer thereto. In accordance with one illustrative embodiment, a request to authorize the transaction is received, wherein the request includes a customer identifier; a determination is made whether to authorize the transaction based on the customer identifier; if the determination is to authorize the transaction, that fact is communicated to the customer; a confirmation that the transaction should, in fact, be authorized is received back from the customer; and the transaction is authorized in response to the customer's confirmation thereof. In accordance with another illustrative embodiment, a transaction initiated by an agent of the customer (i.e., the principal) is authorized by the principal when one or more threshold parameters that may be pre-defined by the principal are exceeded. A preferred method of alerting the customer and receiving a confirmation to authorize the transaction back from the customer is illustratively afforded by conventional two-way pagers.

Transaction authorization and alert system

Apparatus and method are disclosed for automatically generating computer programs for use in parallel processor arrangements from a user generated block diagram of the program. The system includes a library of parallel program modules and parallel program interface modules, a background manager (glue), a virtual shared memory, and a visual programming interface. Using the visual programming interface, the user selects parallel program modules and program interface modules and specifies operating characteristics information required to implement a block diagram of the desired program. The user then enables the system to create the source program, compile the program and execute the program on the system. The glue manager automatically establishes the communication paths needed to provide communication between the program and interface modules.
