A furnace may include a furnace muffle that can accommodate relatively larger workpieces than other furnaces. The furnace muffle may include a cover that includes one or more sets of plates. The plates may be configured to prevent sag during extended runtimes while still enabling the furnace to reach a temperature (e.g., a temperature between 1590° C. and 1650° C.) for sintering a workpiece. In some examples, the cover may include a first set of plates of a first material (e.g., a first alumina refractory material) and a second set of plates of a second material (e.g., a second alumina refractory material). The second material may have greater thermal conductivity than the first material. Accordingly, plates of the second set may be located in higher temperature zones of the furnace to enable efficient heat transfer from heater elements through the furnace muffle to a contact plate where a workpiece is heated.

Glass ceramic articles having improved properties and methods for making the same

Curable compositions that include an oligomer with one or more internal urethane linkages and OH groups capped by an Acrylate-End-Capping (AEC) compound. The curable compositions may be made by reacting a polyol with a diisocyanate compound to form a pre-oligomer compound having one or more internal urethane linkages and terminal OH groups. The curable coating compositions may be cured to form a coating for an optical fiber, for example, a primary coating for an optical fiber.

The present disclosure provides coating compositions and cured products formed from the coating compositions. The cured products can be formed at high cure speeds from the coating compositions and feature low Young's modulus, high tear strength, and/or high tensile toughness. The cured products can be used as primary coatings for optical fibers. The primary coatings provide good microbending performance and are resistant to defect formation during fiber coating processing and handling operations. The coating compositions include an oligomer, an alkoxylated monofunctional acrylate monomer, and preferably, an N-vinyl amide compound.

Fiber coating compositions with high cure speed

The present disclosure provides coating compositions that can be cured at fast rates as well as coatings and cured products formed from the coating compositions. The coating compositions include an acylgermane photoinitiator that leads to fast cure speeds. The coating compositions include primary coating compositions and secondary coating compositions. The coating compositions can be cured to form primary and secondary coatings of optical fibers. The primary coatings feature low Young's modulus and high tear strength. The primary coatings provide good microbending performance and are resistant to defect formation during the fiber draw process and subsequent handling operations. The secondary coatings feature high Young's modulus and good puncture resistance.

Fiber coating compositions with acylgermane photoinitiators

A method for making oligomers is described. The method includes reacting a polyol with a precursor having mixed functionality. The precursor includes a curable functional group and an isocyanate group capable of reacting with an alcohol group of the polyol. The precursor reacts with the alcohol group of the polyol to form a urethane linkage and to add a covalently bonded curable functional group to the polyol. The oligomers can be included in coating compositions for optical fiber and lead to coatings having improved tear strength.
