Variable optical attenuator assisted control of optical devices is provided. A device comprises: an uncooled laser and ring resonator modulator, an optical waveguide configured convey an optical signal of the laser from an input to an output, a heater that heats the ring resonator modulator, a variable optical attenuator that attenuates the optical signal on the optical waveguide, one or more power monitors and a controller. The controller is configured to: in response to determining that one or more of: heater power overhead is unavailable to reduce heater power for laser wavelength tracking; and the heater power is at or below a given lower heater power; and determining that that laser current is increased to assist with ring resonator modulator control for the laser wavelength tracking: control, using the one or more power monitors, attenuation of the VOA to control the output power into a target output power range.

Variable optical attenuator assisted control of optical devices

A device and method for tuning a ring resonator using self-heating stabilization is provided. A light source is controlled to produce an optical signal, input to an optical ring resonator, at a power where self-heating shifts a resonance wavelength of the optical ring resonator by at least 10 picometers, the self-heating comprising absorption in the optical ring resonator of optical power from a received optical signal. Prior to using the optical ring resonator at least one of modulate and filter the optical signal at the optical ring resonator, a heater of the optical ring resonator is controlled to an operating temperature at which the resonance wavelength of the optical ring resonator is greater than a respective wavelength of the optical signal.

Device and method for tuning a ring resonator using self-heating stabilization

A Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Network (WDM-PON) includes a plurality of broadband light sources, each broadband light source being connected to receive a respective data signal and generating a corresponding modulated broadband optical signal. An Array Waveguide Grating (AWG) is connected for receiving each modulated broadband optical signal through a respective branch port and for generating a filtered broadband signal. The AWG implements a filter function comprising a respective pass-band associated with each branch port such that the filtered broadband signal exhibits a respective intensity peak associated with each pass-band. Each intensity peak is modulated with data from a respective one of the broadband light sources. A bandwidth of the respective modulated broadband optical signal generated by each broadband light source is at least equal to the width of a channel-band of the AWG.

Color free WDM PON based on broadband optical transmitters

A method of estimating an injection power of seed light injected into an injection-seeded transmitter. A back face monitoring (BFM) response of the injection-seeded transmitter is determined, and data representative of the BFM response stored in a memory. During run-time, a controller of the injection-seeded transmitter, detects a temperature of the injection-seeded transmitter and an instantaneous BFM current. BFM response data is obtained from the memory based on the detected temperature, and the seed light injection power estimated based on the obtained data and the detected instantaneous BFM current.

Tracking injection seeding power based on back facet monitoring (BFM) of an injection seeded laser

In a Wavelength Division Multiplexed Passive Optical Network (WDM-PON) including, a system for overlaying an analog broadcast signal. An Optical Line Terminal of the WDM-PON includes a broadband light source for generating uplink seed light for each uplink channel of the WDM-PON, and a modulator for modulating the analog broadcast signal onto the uplink seed light. An Optical Network Terminal of the WDM-PON receives the uplink seed light from the Optical Line Terminal, and includes an optical divider for dividing the received seed light into a first signal and a second signal; a light source for generating an uplink data signals using the first signal as seed light; and an RF receiver for detecting the analog broadcast signal modulated on the second signal.

WDM PON RF overlay architecture based on quantum dot multi-wavelength laser source

Described is a method for controlling the wavelength of a laser in a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) system. The method includes generating broadband light having a dithered optical power and a wavelength spectrum that includes a plurality of WDM wavelengths. The broadband light is spectrally filtered to generate a spectrally-sliced optical signal having a wavelength spectrum that includes one of the WDM wavelengths. The spectrally-sliced optical signal is injected into a laser and a dithered optical power of the laser is determined. A parameter of the laser is controlled in response to the determination of the dithered optical power to thereby align a wavelength of the laser to the wavelength spectrum of the spectrally-sliced optical signal.
