In an ultra-wideband ('UWB') communication system, methods are disclosed for transmitting packets in multiple portions, each having a different pulse repetition frequency (“PRF”). Methods are also disclosed for transmitting packets discontinuously.

Ultra-wideband communication system

An ultra-wideband (UWB) communication system comprising a transmitter having two antennas and a receiver having a single receive antenna. Respective selected portions of the UWB signal are transmitted by the transmitter via each of the two transmit antennas and are received at the receive antenna. By comparing the phases of the received signal portions, the phase difference of departure can be determined. From this phase difference the known distance, d, between the transmit antennas the Cartesian (x, y) location of the transmitter relative to the receiver can be directly determined.

Method and apparatus for determining the angle of departure

A method of synchronizing signals is disclosed. The method comprises using a clock tracking system to convert a future event target time specified in a time base of a master device into the local unsynchronized time bases of one or more slave devices. Each of the slave devices then generates an event signal at the converted time, such that a coordinated delivery of synchronized signals is achieved.

In an ultra-wideband ('UWB') communication system comprising a pair of UWB transceivers, an asynchronous two-way ranging method for closely estimating the time-of-flight between the transceivers after the exchange of only 3 messages between the transceivers. In an alternate asynchronous two-way ranging method, the time-of-flight between the transceivers may be closely estimated after the exchange of only 4 messages between the transceivers.

Asymmetric double-sided two-way ranging in an ultrawideband communication system

An ultra-wideband communication and/or location system having a plurality of channels, each implementing a respective one of a plurality of predetermined codewords. Within each channel, one or more predetermined pulse repetition frequencies are defined. Within a single UWB system, more than two networks of transceivers may be co-located without mutual interference if each is assigned a unique combination of codewords and spreading factors.

In an RF system comprising a first transceiver () and a second transceiver (), a first transmission, T, by the first transceiver () allows the second transceiver () to determine two possible valid angles of arrival, &#xb1;&#x3b8;, of T. A second transmission, T, from the second transmitter () to the first transmitter () containing &#x3b8;and a bearing, &#x3b1;, of a known fixed anchor relative to the second transmitter (), allows the first transmitter () to determine two possible valid angles of arrival, &#xb1;&#x3b8;, of T. From &#x3b8;, &#x3b1;, &#x3b8;, and a bearing, &#x3b1;, of the known fixed anchor relative to the first transmitter (), the first transceiver () can determine the valid angle of arrival of T.

Measuring angle of incidence in an ultrawideband communication system

In an ultra-wideband ('UWB') receiver, a received UWB signal is periodically digitized as a series of ternary samples. The samples are continuously correlated with a predetermined preamble sequence to develop a correlation value. When the value exceeds a predetermined threshold, indicating that the preamble sequence is being received, a stream of estimates of the channel impulse response ('CIR') are developed. When a start-of-frame delimiter (&#x201c;SFD&#x201d;) is detected, the best CIR estimate is provided to a channel matched filter (&#x201c;CMF&#x201d;) substantially to filter channel-injected noise. The time of arrival of the first arriving path is developed from the stream of CIR estimates.

Receiver for use in an ultra-wideband communication system

In a communication system, a transmitter receives an input bit, and in response thereto, generates at least an n-bit codeword, each bit of which is generated by a respective one of n generators of which m are exactly the same, m being greater than n/2. A receiver comprises: m detectors, each adapted to receive the bit generated by a respective one of the m generators, and provide a respective one of m partial detection signals if a strength of the received bit exceeds a predetermined minimum threshold; and a majority logic element adapted to receive each of the m partial detection signals, and provide an output bit indicative of the input bit only if more than m/2 of the received m partial detection signals exceeds the minimum threshold.

Convolutional code for use in a communication system

A method for transmitting data through an analogue channel from an analogue modem to a digital modem includes encoding data inputted to the analogue modem. An encoder encodes data inputted into the analogue modem into corresponding constellation points of a one-dimensional constellation. During initial handshaking a microprocessor in the digital modem computes the constellation points of the constellation so that mid points between adjacent constellation points coincide with mid points between adjacent codec levels. The computed constellation points of the constellation are transmitted along with the value of the largest constellation point and its corresponding codec level to the analogue modem. By selecting the mid points between the constellation points to correspond with mid points between adjacent codec levels the noise margin is significantly enhanced.
