Sulfonated uintaite is prepared by sulfonating a naturally occurring uintaite charge with a sulfonating agent such as sulfur trioxide, fuming sulfuric acid, chlorosulfonic acid, oleum, or concentrated sulfuric acid to produce sulfonic acids of uintaite. The resulting sulfonic acids are neutralized with a caustic neutralizing agent and sulfonated uintaite is the product. The sulfonated uintaite product is dried and packaged. The produced sulfonated uintaite is useful in oil and gas well working fluids (drilling muds). Neutralization of the resulting sulfonic acids with sodium hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide as the caustic neutralizing agent yields water and oil-soluble or dispersible salts of the sulfonated uintaite. Neutralization with Ca(OH) (calcium hydroxide) as the caustic neutralizing agent yields a product which is preferable in oil-based muds.

Methods and compositions for acid treating subterranean formations penetrated by well bores are provided. The compositions are each comprised of an aqueous acid solution, one or more acrylamide polymers dissolved in the acid solution, a liquid hydrocarbon dispersed in the acid solution, and one or more nonionic surface active agents having at least one reactive hydroxyl group per molecule. The acrylamide polymer or polymers increase the viscosity of the acid solution and the surface active agent or agents interact with the polymer of polymers whereby stabilized high viscosity results. The subterranean formation acid treating methods of the invention are carried out by introducing the high viscosity acid compositions therein, allowing the compositions to react until spent and recovering the compositions.

Compositions for acid treating subterranean formations

Methods and compositions for acid treating subterranean formations penetrated by well bores are provided. The compositions are each comprised of an aqueous acid solution, one or more acrylamide polymers dissolved in the acid solution, a liquid hydrocarbon dispersed in the acid solution, and one or more nonionic surface active agents having at least one reactive hydroxyl group per molecule. The acrylamide polymer or polymers increase the viscosity of the acid solution and the surface active agent or agents interact with the polymer or polymers whereby stabilized high viscosity results. The subterranean formation acid treating methods of the invention are carried out by introducing the high viscosity acid compositions therein, allowing the compositions to react until spent and recovering the compositions.

Blends of water soluble polymers containing varying ratios of acrylamide and sodium 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate are provided which synergistically increase the viscosity of acidic solutions. Improved methods of matrix acidizing and fracture acidizing are also provided.

A drilling fluid additive is disclosed which will prevent water loss into subterranean formations during the drilling of oil and gas wells in hard brine environments. The drilling fluid additive comprises a hydrocarbon, an anionic surfactant, an alcohol, a sulfonated asphalt, a biopolymer, and optionally an organophilic clay, poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone-co-sodium-2-acryamido-2-methylpropane sulfonate, and water.

Drilling fluid additives for use in hard brine environments

The water loss properties of well completion and well workover fluids are improved by the addition of an effective amount of at least one adjuvant selected from (1) sodium carbonate with either sodium bicarbonate or an organic polycarboxylic acid or polycarboxylic acid anhydride or (2) sodium bicarbonate alone. In another embodiment, the adjuvants are added to stabilize water loss control agents in wellbore fluids, especially at elevated temperatures.

Gelled compositions suitable as fracture fluids and water diversion agents comprising water, a polymeric viscosifier, an aldehyde component, and at least one phenolic component such as resorcinol, catechol, and the like, as well as selected oxidized phenolic materials such as 1,4-benzoquinone of natural or synthetic origin and natural and modified tannins. The gelled compositions can additionally contain gel stabilizers and chemical buffering agents.

Shear-thickening aqueous compositions useful as workover fluids in producing or injection wells, as water diversion agents and mobility control fluids in post-primary oil recovery operations, and as hydraulic fracturing fluids well stimulation treatments are provided comprising the reaction product formed from a high molecular weight polyalkylene oxide polymer and a synthetic resin produced from aldehydes and phenols in an alkaline environment.

Gelled acidic compositions suitable for either matrix-acidizing or fracture-acidizing of subterranean formations comprising water, a water-dispersible polymer selected from cellulose ethers and polymers of acrylamides, an acid, an aldehyde, and a phenolic compound capable of causing gelation of an aqueous dispersion of the polymer, acid, aldehyde, and phenolic compound are provided. In another embodiment, guar gum, polyvinylpyrrolidone and biopolysaccharides can also be used as the polymeric component in said compositions.
