Cable operating apparatus includes an automatic cable slack removing arrangement, characterized in that the cable tension-adjusting pawl is mounted both for pivotal movement between engaged and disengaged positions relative to the tension-adjusting ratchet, and for lateral movement between nested and extended positions relative to a pocket defined within the operating handle to which the pawl is connected. A cable-tension pawl spring biases the pawl toward the engaged and extended positions, so that when the pawl is engaged with the cable-tension ratchet, the cable tension will bias the ratchet in a direction to displace the pawl to its nested position in frictional engagement with the bottom wall of the pocket, whereby the pawl is more positively maintained in the ratchet-engaged condition. The pawl includes a lateral tab that engages a ramp on the main ratchet when the handle is in the cable-released position, thereby to disengage the cable-tension pawl from its ratchet and thus activate the automatic cable slack removing device.

Cable operating apparatus including a pocketed pawl

A parking brake assembly of the blind-cable-connection type including a backing plate containing an opening, a helical guide spring arranged to guide a flexible resilient inner cable member toward a ramp surface on a parking brake lever for the blind connection to the inner cable member to the lever, characterized in that the angle of inclination of the ramp surface relative to the cable axis is contained in a plane that is both parallel with the longitudinal axis of the lever and that is inclined at an acute angle relative to the axis of the inner cable member. This construction permits the parking brake lever to be simply and economically formed from a blank of flat metal stock, the cable-retaining slot being defined by a slot contained between bifurcated portions of the ramp surface. The helical guide spring includes portions having tightly wound turns, thereby to assist in connecting the spring with the backing plate and/or with the parking brake lever.

Brake apparatus with blind cable installing means

A parking brake operating mechanism is disclosed which includes a ratchet link and an operating lever pivotally connected with a bracket housing so as to effect a mechanical advantage when displacing the brake cable operating pin in the brake-engaged direction. The ratchet link is pivotally connected intermediate its ends with the housing by a first pivot axis, and the operating lever is pivotally connected intermediate its ends with one end of the ratchet link by a second pivot axis, one end of the operating lever being connected with the pin that operates the parking brake cable. The first and second pivot axes are arranged generally on opposite sides of the brake cable pin, the distance between said axes being greater than the distance between the pin axis and the first axis, thereby to effect the desired mechanical advantage. A pawl cooperates with ratchet teeth on the ratchet link to normally prevent pivotal movement thereof in the brake-released direction.
