The invention relates to a tire having at least one component (e.g. tread) of a rubber composition comprised of an amine functionalized styrene/conjugated diene copolymer elastomer (e.g. styrene/butadiene and/or styrene/isoprene/butadiene copolymer elastomer) which contains reinforcement comprised of silanol functionalized particulate carbon black having silica domains covering a fraction of the carbon black surface together with an alkoxysilane polysulfide coupling agent. The silica domains on the carbon black surface contain hydroxyl groups (e.g. silanol groups) on their surfaces which are reactive with the alkoxysilane moiety of the coupling agent. The amine functionalized styrene/butadiene elastomer is an organic solution polymerization prepared elastomer which contains pendant and/or terminal amine groups as one or more of primary amine, secondary amine, tertiary amine, and/or heterocyclic amine groups. The amine functionalized elastomer may be tin coupled.

The invention relates to an endless vehicular rubber track. The invention particularly relates to such track having hard rubber guide lugs with a softer guide support layer. It is to be appreciated that such guide lugs may also be positively driven drive lugs. The invention further relates to a vehicle having such track.

A method of coating a tire, comprising the steps of applying to an outer surface of a green tire: a precure paint essentially free of curatives, the precure paint comprising 100 parts by weight of elastomer, and from about 2000 to about 4000 parts by weight of an organic solvent.

Method for coating uncured tires

A halobutyl rubber is generally used in the innerliner of pneumatic tires to retard the escape of air used to inflate the tire, thereby maintaining tire pressure. Since halobutyl rubbers, such as bromobutyl rubber, are generally the most expensive elastomers used in tires, it is desirable from a standpoint of cost reduction to reduce the level of halobutyl rubbers used in tires. The present invention relates to a technique for reducing the quantity of halobutyl rubber utilized in the innerliner of tubeless pneumatic vehicle tires. The present invention more specifically relates to a tire innerliner and pneumatic tires containing the same, which are prepared from a composition comprising, based on 100 parts by weight of rubber, a blend of (1) about 50 parts to about 90 parts of a halobutyl rubber and (2) about 10 parts to about 50 parts of a styrene-isoprene-butadiene terpolymer rubber having a first glass transition temperature which is within the range of about -110.degree. C. to about -20.degree. C. and a second glass transition temperature which is within the range of about -50.degree. C. to about 0.degree. C., wherein said styrene-isoprene-butadiene terpolymer rubber contains about 20 weight percent to about 40 weight percent bound styrene.

Tire innerliner composition

The subject invention relates to a technique for synthesizing rubbery copolymers of styrene and butadiene and/or isoprene. These rubbers exhibit an excellent combination of properties for utilization in high performance tire tread rubber compounds. The subject invention specifically discloses a process for preparing a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) which comprises: copolymerizing from about 30 weight percent to about 55 weight percent styrene and from about 45 weight percent to about 70 weight percent 1,3-butadiene in an alkane solvent, such as hexane, at a temperature which is within the range of about -10.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. in the presence of (a) an alkali metal alkoxide, and (b) an organolithium compound, wherein the molar ratio of the alkali metal alkoxide to the organolithium compound is within the range of about 0.01:1 to about 1:1. The subject invention further discloses a process for preparing a rubbery copolymer of styrene and isoprene having an excellent combination of properties for use in making tire treads by a solution polymerization process which comprises: copolymerizing from about 30 weight percent to about 55 weight percent styrene and from about 45 weight percent to about 70 weight percent isoprene in an alkane solvent at a temperature which is within the range of about -10.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. in the presence of (a) an alkali metal alkoxide, and (b) an organolithium compound, wherein the molar ratio of the alkali metal alkoxide to the organolithium compound is within the range of about 0.01:1 to about 1:1.

The subject invention discloses a process for preparing a coupled styrene-isoprene-butadiene rubber which is particularly valuable for use in making automobile tire tread rubber compounds which comprises the steps of (1) solution terpolymerizing in an organic solvent from about 5 weight percent to about 40 weight percent styrene, from about 1 weight percent to about 10 weight percent isoprene, and from about 50 weight percent to about 94 weight percent 1,3-butadiene, based on total monomers, to a conversion of at least about 90% to produce a living styrene-isoprene-butadiene polymer, wherein the terpolymerization is initiated with an organolithium compound, and wherein the terpolymerization is conducted in the presence of a polar modifier at a molar ratio of the polar modifier to the organolithium compound, which is within the range of about 0.5:1 to about 5:1, and wherein the terpolymerization is conducted at a temperature which is within the range of about 20.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C.; and (2) coupling the living styrene-isoprene-butadiene polymer with a coupling agent selected from the group consisting of tin tetrachloride and silicon tetrachloride, wherein the molar ratio of the coupling agent to the organolithium compound is within the range of about 1:3 to 1:6.

The present invention relates to a tire innerliner and pneumatic tires containing the same, which are prepared from a composition comprising, based on 100 parts by weight of rubber, a blend containing 30 to about 50 parts by weight of a solution polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber having a Tg ranging from -45.degree. C. to -65.degree. C. and 70 to 50 parts by weight of a halobutyl rubber.

The subject invention discloses a process for preparing a coupled styrene-isoprene-butadiene rubber which is particularly valuable for use in making automobile tire tread rubber compounds which comprises the steps of (1) solution terpolymerizing in an organic solvent from about 5 weight percent to about 40 weight percent styrene, from about 1 weight percent to about 10 weight percent isoprene, and from about 50 weight percent to about 94 weight percent 1,3-butadiene, based on total monomers, to a conversion of at least about 90% to produce a living styrene-isoprene-butadiene polymer, wherein the terpolymerization is initiated with an organolithium compound, and wherein the terpolymerization is conducted in the presence of a polar modifier at a molar ratio of the polar modifier to the organolithium compound, which is within the range of about 0.5:1 to about 5:1, and wherein the terpolymerization is conducted at a temperature which is within the range of about 20.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C.; and (2) coupling the living styrene-isoprene-butadiene polymer with a coupling agent selected from the group consisting of tin tetrachloride and silicon tetrachloride, wherein the molar ratio of the coupling agent to the organolithium compound is within the range of about 3 to 1:6.

It has been determined that certain rubbery polymers having multiple glass transition temperatures can be utilized in making tires which have improved rolling resistance, improved wet skid resistance, and outstanding tread wear. These rubbery polymers are derived from at least one conjugated diolefin monomer, have a first glass transition temperature which is between -110.degree. C. and -20.degree. C. and have a second glass transition temperature which is between -50.degree. C. and 0.degree. C. These rubber polymers can be homopolymers of conjugated diolefin monomers, copolymers of more than one conjugated diolefin monomer, or copolymers derived from at least one conjugated diolefin monomer and at least one vinyl aromatic monomer.

Rubber composition

Copolymers of at least two acrylate monomers such as isobutyl methacrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, an organic acid or acid anhydride, and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone are prepared by emulsion polymerization. The polymer is then coagulated and dried, and dry resin is mixed with a water miscible coalescing solvent and a volatile amine. The amine-treated resin is water reducible and when used as a coating resin produces coatings of unusual water resistance and adhesion to metal surfaces.
