Provided are bearing assemblies including one or more substrate assemblies, such as thrust bearing assemblies. The substrate assemblies include a bearing element fixed to a substrate. The bearing elements are formed from a thermally stable material such as a ceramic-bonded diamond composite. Methods for manufacturing the bearing assemblies are also provided.

Bearing assembly

A method of grinding a ferrous roll may include: rotating a grinding wheel on a machine spindle to form a rotating grinding wheel; rotating a ferrous roll to form a rotating roll surface; bringing the rotating grinding wheel into contact with the rotating roll surface; traversing the rotating grinding wheel across an axial roll length of the rotating roll surface; and grinding the roll surface while varying at least one or both of a grinding wheel rotational speed and a said mill roll rotational speed at an amplitude of +/&#x2212;1 to 40% with a period of 1 to 30 seconds.

Iron and steel rolls are ground to production quality requirements with a grinding wheel that requires minimal wheel wear compensation, profile error compensation or taper error compensation during the grinding process. The grinding wheel consists essentially of a superabrasive material selected from the group of natural diamond, synthetic diamond, cubic boron nitride, and mixtures thereof, in a bond system, for a grinding wheel with extended wheel life, and which removes minimum amount of stock off the roll to achieve desired roll geometry.

A grinding wheel system includes a grinding wheel with at least one embedded sensor. The system also includes an adapter disk containing electronics that process signals produced by each embedded sensor and that transmits sensor information to a data processing platform for further processing of the transmitted information.

Grinding wheel system

A jadeite material has a thickness in excess of about 1.0 mm and CIELAB indices of L*&#x3e;42, a*&#x3c;&#x2212;6, and b*&#x3e;+6. The grain size of the jadeite material is less than about 30 microns and is an equiaxed grain structure. The jadeite material has an optical transmission peak between 500 and 565 nm with an I/Ioptical transmission ratio of over 40%. The first step in making the jadeite material is to wrap a glass block, convertible by HP/HT into jadeite and having a nominal composition of NaAlSiO, with a graphite or refractive metal sheet. The wrapped glass block is placed in an HP/HT apparatus, rapidly heated, and subjected therein to a pressure in excess of about 3 GPa and a temperature in excess of about 1000&#xb0; C. for a time adequate to convert the glass block into jadeite. The jadeite material then is cooled and the pressure subsequently released.
