A modular brake and rudder control system usable in an aircraft. The modular system mounts atop the flight deck floor without penetrating through the floor when the system is operatively connected to the aircraft's fly-by-wire brake and rudder systems. Pedal assemblies extending from the housing are rotatable and longitudinally moveable relative to the housing. A brake control system fully contained in the housing is connected to the pedal assemblies and provides a signal via an electrical connector to the fly-by-wire brake system upon rotation of the pedals. A rudder control system is fully contained in the housing and is operable independent of the brake control system. The rudder control system detects longitudinal motion of the pedal assemblies and provides a signal via an electrical connector to the fly-by-wire rudder system. The housing, the electrical connectors, the pedal assemblies, the brake control system and the rudder control system define a modular component installable and removable from the cockpit as a unit.

The adaptive brake application and initial skid detection system allows rapid brake application and prevents deep initial skids. Brake torque is compared with a predetermined threshold brake torque. Wheel velocity error signals are also generated to indicated the difference between the wheel velocity and a reference velocity signal. A torque bias modulator integrator responsive to brake torque signals adjusts the wheel velocity error signals to provide an anti-skid control signal. The torque bias modulator integrator can also be initialized to the value of the measured brake torque when the wheel velocity error signals indicate the beginning of a skid. Brake torque difference signals are generated to indicate the difference between brake torque and a commanded brake torque, and an adjusted brake torque error signal is generated in response to the brake torque difference signals.

Wheel velocity error signals are also generated to indicated the difference between the wheel velocity and a reference velocity signal. A pressure bias modulator integrator responsive to brake pressure signals adjusts the wheel velocity error signals to provide an anti-skid control signal. The pressure bias modulator integrator can also be initialized to the value of the measured brake pressure when the wheel velocity error signals indicate the beginning of a skid. Brake pressure difference signals are generated to indicate the difference between brake pressure and a commanded brake pressure, and an adjusted brake pressure error signal is generated in response to the brake pressure difference signals.

The braking control system provides dual redundant control of hydraulically operated wheel braking for an aircraft. A primary hydraulic system provides hydraulic power for normal operation of the plurality of wheel brakes, and a secondary hydraulic system provides hydraulic power for alternate operation of the plurality of wheel brakes. The primary hydraulic system comprises at least one primary hydraulic fluid control channel and at least one secondary hydraulic fluid control channel, the primary and secondary fluid channels being redundant and partitioned among the plurality of wheel brakes so that even if one of the primary hydraulic fluid control channels and one of the secondary channels fail to apply pressure, braking will be lost to only a portion of the wheel brakes and the loss will be in a symmetrical pattern.

A control unit is provided for controlling brake pressure communicated to the wheel brakes through the primary and secondary hydraulic systems, and a monitor channel is operatively connected to the primary hydraulic system for detecting faults in the primary and secondary hydraulic systems and for selecting between the primary and secondary hydraulic systems for providing braking pressure. The monitor channel detects occurrence of loss of pressure in the primary hydraulic system, if any brake has unwanted pressure applied, and if a fault is detected on the primary or secondary channels that affects more than one wheel brake on each landing gear. The primary hydraulic system comprises at least one primary hydraulic fluid control channel and at least one secondary hydraulic fluid control channel, the primary and secondary fluid channels being redundant and partitioned among the plurality of wheel brakes so that even if both the primary and secondary channels fail to apply pressure, braking will be lost to only a portion of the wheel brakes and the loss will be in a symmetrical pattern, and the secondary hydraulic system comprises at least one primary hydraulic fluid control channel and at least one secondary hydraulic fluid control channel.
