A system and a method predict risk of diabetic foot ulcer by automatically recognizing and tracking physiological activities of a person using a smart textile that has a plurality of pressure sensors and a plurality of temperature sensors. Pressure data indicative of plantar pressure applied to each of the pressure sensors by the person is received from the smart textile. Temperature data indicative of plantar temperature at each of the temperature sensors is received from the smart textile. Plantar parameters are determined from the pressure and temperature data and plantar responses to activity of the person are determined from the plantar parameters. A risk of the person developing a foot ulcer is determined based upon the plantar parameters and the plantar responses.

The present invention relates to a light-weight, small and portable ambulatory sensor for measuring and monitoring a person's physical activity. Based on these measurements and computations, the invented system quantifies the subject's physical activity, quantifies the subject's gait, determines his or her risk of falling, and automatically detects falls. The invention combines the features of portability, high autonomy, and real-time computational capacity. High autonomy is achieved by using only accelerometers, which have low power consumption rates as compared with gyroscope-based systems. Accelerometer measurements, however, contain significant amounts of noise, which must be removed before further analysis. The invention therefore uses novel time-frequency filters to denoise the measurements, and in conjunction with biomechanical models of human movement, perform the requisite computations, which may also be done in real time.

Fall detection and fall risk detection systems and methods

Systems and methods for using a smart carpet to monitor a health status of an individual. The smart carpet has electronics and a plurality of pressure sensing areas for sensing plantar pressure of the individual. A monitoring computer comprising a processor and a memory including machine readable instructions processes carpet data. A first part of the smart carpet is scanned at a first frequency and a second part of the smart carpet is scanned at a second frequency greater than the first frequency. Plantar pressures are received from the second part of the carpet and the instructions evaluate the plantar pressures to determine at least one of a physical activity and a physiological activity. Where an emergency condition is determined, an alarm is communicated to monitoring personnel.

Smart carpet systems and methods of using same for monitoring physical and physiological activities

Systems and methods are disclosed which provide a way to diagnose frailty using an upper extremity (and/or other body portions) frailty assessment. Within this method, several parameters can be calculated based on the kinematics (e.g., pure motion without including forces) and kinetics (e.g., analysis of forces and moments) of, for example, joint flexion/extension. An ordinal and/or continuous frailty score can be determined based on calculated markers of frailty, such as slowness, weakness, flexibility, and/or exhaustion, while performing a short-duration upper extremity task. Patients can be classified as non-frail, pre-frail, or frail.

Method and system to identify frailty using body movement

Methods, devices, and systems according to present principles provide ways to diagnose frailty and assess the severity of its clinical status&#x2014;e.g., non-frail, pre-frail, and frail, especially as measured and quantified during activities of daily living. Systems and methods according to present principles objectively quantify physical activity behaviors and identify specific motor tasks, which indicate clinical frailty syndrome behaviors such as flopping, cautious-sitting, non-uniform walking fluctuations, cognitive decline, slowness, weakness, and exhaustion. Additionally, the systems and methods allow improved sensitivity and specificity of frailty identification by further assessing physiological parameters such as heart rate, respiration rate, and skin temperature in response to, or recovery from, specific activities.

Method, device, and system for diagnosing and monitoring frailty

The present invention provides methods and devices for correcting motion related imaging artifacts. In particular, the methods include positioning a device configured to detect motion at a region of interest on an object, simultaneously obtaining an image data set of the region of interest and a motion data set at the region of interest with the device, and correcting motion related imaging artifacts with an algorithm configured to identify time periods of motion from the motion data set, and correct the image data set corresponding to the identified time periods of motion.

Systems, methods and devices for performing motion artifact correction

The present disclosure is directed to a body-worn sensor-based system for evaluating the biomechanics and the motor adaptation characteristics of postural control during a sport activity such as a golf swing. Various embodiments use sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers to measure the three-dimensional motion of ankle and hip joints. In several embodiments, additional sensors attached to other body segments are used to improve the accuracy of the data or detect particular instants during the swing (e.g., top of back swing, instant of the maximum speed of arm, and instant of ball impact). In a golf embodiment, the system combines the measured data in conjunction with a biomechanical model of the human body to: (1) estimate the two-dimensional sway of the golfer's center of mass; (2) quantify and evaluate the golfer's balance via his/her postural compensatory strategy; and (3) provide visual feedback to the golfer for improving dynamic postural control.
