A gas detection circuit for use in selectively detecting a predetermined gas has a plurality of gas sensors coupled to a sensor measuring circuit. Each gas sensor has a different response to the predetermined gas at a predetermined concentration. The sensor measuring circuit measures a conditioned state of each gas sensor and transmits the measurements to a cross checking circuit which determines whether the conditioned state of each gas sensor is within a corresponding window of upper and lower limit values thereby indicating the possible presence of the predetermined gas by the corresponding gas sensor. Following the testing of the conditioned state of each gas sensor, the cross checking circuit transmits a signal indicating which of the gas sensors indicates the possible presence of the predetermined gas and if all sensors are within corresponding windows, representing detection of the gas, another signal is transmitted to trigger an alarm or other warning system.

Apparatus and method for detecting gas and vapor

Thick oriented films are produced from oxides of molybdenum, tungsten or titanium. These films comprise a plurality of single-molecular thickness layers of semi-crystalline oxide having parallel basal planes. The oxides are produced by sintering highly oriented films of the corresponding metallic sulfide at a temperature of 300.degree.-350.degree. C. The film may be deposited on a substrate between electrical contacts to function as a gas sensor for hydrogen.

Transition metal oxide films and gas sensors thereof

A lubricant has the formula X:Y, wherein X is a layered material selected from the group consisting of layered transition metal dichalcogenides and graphite. Y is a magnetic inclusion between layers of X. The lubricant is made by adding X to a solution containing ions of Y. The solution is continuously mixed and dried. The Y is then reduced to a metallic form.

Hydrogen and gaseous hydrocarbons are stored by introducing the gases into a transition metal dichalcogenide having the formula MX.sub.2. M is selected from the group consisting of Mo, W and Ti and X is selected from the group consisting of S and Se. The MX.sub.2 is in the form of platelets affixed to basal planes of adjacent platelets. The basal planes of adjacent platelets are separated by voids. The composition is prepared by intercalating MX.sub.2 powder with lithium, adding water to separate the MX.sub.2 into single layers and then adding acid to adjust the pH to a range where edges and basal planes of the single layers have opposite charges. Preferably a catalyst is added to the MX.sub.2, the catalyst being selected from the group of metals consisting of Pt, Pd, Ni, Co, Fe, Mg, Zr, Cr, Al, Zn, Mn or combinations thereof. The gas can be recovered from the composition by heating to a temperature of 250.degree. C. when the catalyst is used.

Gas storage using transition metal dichalcogenides

A catalyst having the composition A:Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 is used as a catalyst for producing ethylene from methane. A is an alkali metal, preferably lithium. The catalyst may be doped with an additive such as MgCl.sub.2. A weak oxidation catalyst such as MoO.sub.3 or ZrO.sub.2 may be added. The catalyst is heated to at least 750.degree. C. in a catalytic reactor and a mixture of air and methane is passed over the heated catalyst. Oxygen or air may be added part way along the catalytic reaction to oxidize H.sub.2 but not C.sub.2 H.sub.4.

A novel method of preparing a new transition alumina fractured into ultra-fine particles which have utility inter alia as catalysts. The method of preparing this new alumina fractured into ultra-fine particles comprises: (a) introducing an alkali metal into the pores of a porous alumina, and (b) immersing the alkali metal-treated alumina in water whereupon hydrogen gas is generated and fractures the alumina into ultra-fine particles.

A novel flocculated methanation, hydrogenation or hydrodesulfurization catalyst of the form MS.sub.2 :Y:Z wherein MS.sub.2 is a single layer transition metal dichalcogenide sulfide, Y is a promoter substance and Z is a support substance, is disclosed.

Novel transition metal dichalcogenide catalysts

Novel single layer materials of the form MX.sub.2, where MX.sub.2 is a layer-type dichalcogenide such as MoS.sub.2, TaS.sub.2, WS.sub.2, or the like, exfoliated by intercalation of an alkali metal, and immersion in water, are disclosed. MoS.sub.2 has been exfoliated into monolayers by intercalation with lithium followed by reaction with water. X-ray diffraction analysis demonstrates that the exfoliated MoS.sub.2 in suspension is in the form of one-molecule-thick sheets. X-ray patterns from dried and re-stacked films of exfoliated MoS.sub.2 indicate that the layers are randomly stacked. By adsorbing monolayers or precipitating clusters of various species such as compounds of Co, Ni, Pb, Cd, Al, Ce, In and Zn, on MoS.sub.2 while the sulfide is suspended as single layers and then recrystallizing, a new group of inclusion compounds can be formed. In the re-crystallized or re-stacked materials, the inter-layer spacing can be expanded or contracted compared to MoS.sub.2.
