A method for polymerizing at least one unsaturated monomer in the presence of a latex results in a high solids dispersion of polymer particles with lower viscosities than traditionally observed. A significant wt. % of the polymer from added monomers can be present in large particles, having nonspherical shapes. Some of the original latex particles are retained during the polymerization and these increase the solids content and lower the viscosity by packing in the interstices between large particles. The total polymer solids content can easily be varied from 70 to 92 or more wt. %. The viscosities at very high solids contents become paste-like but the materials still are stable to storage and further handling without causing the dispersion to separate into an agglomerated polymer portion and released water. The dispersions are useful to form sealants, membranes, etc., either with or without other additives. A preferred use is as an acrylate water-based caulking compound where the high solids and thixotropy of the dispersion allows for formation of a water-based caulk with low shrinkage.

High solids copolymer dispersion from a latex and its use in sealants

Particles of a fine powder of a thermoplastic synthetic resin (host powder) having a suitable broad range between its initial glass transition temperature (initial T.sub.g) and its final T.sub.g, are partially coated with an anti-caking coating powder (coating powder) by blending at an elevated temperature to form 'mottled' particles. The elevated temperature is defined in relation to the initial and final T.sub.g s as: (initial T.sub.g -20).degree. C. but below the final T.sub.g. Mottled particles, without being encapsulated, have the unique ability to maintain their individual particulate characteristics at a temperature at least 10.degree. C. above the initial T.sub.g of the uncoated host powder, and flow freely under applied pressure. Such pressure is applied by a rolling drum which spreads the mottled particles onto a target bed where they are selectively sintered With a controlled high energy beam, usually a laser beam. Sequentially sintering contiguous layers of the mottled particles results in a porous sintered body. Such a body may be used to make a prototype of an article, which may be difficult or too expensive to machine, then to form a shell mold for use in investment casting. Mottled particles, when stored above their initial T.sub.g, form a bed from 10% to 65% more dense than a bed of uncoated host particles, even when the coating powder coats less than 50% of the area of the particles of host powder.

Thermoplastic molding compositions and articles comprise immiscible thermoplastic polymer components and reinforcing fibers. The immiscible thermoplastic polymer components and the fibers are blended together under high shear conditions. The molding composition generally contains at least two phases and has an extremely smooth and fiber-free surface. Generally, very good physical properties are obtained such as high impact resistance, high heat distortion temperatures, high tensile modulus, high flex modulus, and the like. A desired blend of thermoplastic components is thermoplastic polyurethane and polyethyleneterephthalate with glass fibers.

Alloys of polycycloolefin polymers are produced by dissolving an ethylene-based functional polymer in at least one polycycloolefin monomer and polymerizing the mixture. Various polycycloolefin catalysts can be utilized. Often it is desirable to utilize bulk polymerization including reaction injection molding (RIM), liquid injection molding (LIM), reinforced reaction injection molding (RRIM), resin transfer molding (RTM), and the like. The alloys have improved properties such as impact strength, solvent resistance, as well as improved thermal aging properties such as retention of impact strength.

Alloys of polycycloolefin polymers are produced by melt blending the same with ethylene-based functional polymers. The polycycloolefin polymer can be a homopolymer, an interpolymer, or blends thereof. The alloys of the present invention have improved properties such as impact strength, solvent resistance, and melt viscosity reduction, as well as improved thermal aging properties such as retention of impact strength and melt viscosity.

Disclosed is a composition for dissipating an electrostatic charge in a polymer matrix. The composition includes an oxirane copolymer wherein said copolymer is prepared from ethylene oxide and either a heterocyclic monomer or a vinyl type monomer. The polymer matrix is either a plastic or an elastomer. In a further embodiment, a third constituent of non ESD polymer or non ESD filler is utilized in the composition to further enhance the electrostatic dissipating performance, and optionally also toughness of the composition.

A thermoplastic elastomer polyurethane is made having improved properties such as flexural modulus, flexural strength, and improved melt processability. An unaged polyurethane containing free isocyanate groups is made in situ in a high shear blending apparatus. The unaged polyurethane is typically transferred to another high shear blending apparatus and blended with either an unmodified polyolefin and/or a carbonyl modified polyolefin along with optional but desirable fibers to produce a thermoplastic elastomer polyurethane composition.

Polymeric blends of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers and crystalline or predominately crystalline polyolefin thermoplastics are produced by high shear mixing of melts of the respective polymers. The stabilized mechanically compatible blend of the ordinarily thermodynamically incompatible polymers comprises from about 3.5 to 20 parts by weight of a polyolefin homopolymer or copolymer with 100 parts by weight of polyurethane. The mechanically compatible polymeric blend is particularly useful for molding plastic articles by injection molding, extrusion, calendering or similar process for molding thermoplastic articles.

Impact resistant properties, especially at low temperatures, melt processing properties, and dimensional stability of thermoplastic elastomer polyurethanes are improved by the addition of a carbonyl modified polyolefin. These improvements are particularly useful for reinforced polyurethanes.

Various processing advantages are gained when ultrasonic vibration is applied to a thermoplastic processing apparatus such as an extruder or an injection molding device. Such advantages include improved flow rate, reduced processing pressure, and consequently reduced processing temperature to mold or extrude the melted thermoplastic. The ultrasonic vibration is desirably applied to the die of the processing apparatus and in a direction longitudinal to the flow of the thermoplastic. Suitable thermoplastics include polystyrene and polyolefins.

Shaped articles which have excellent solvent resistance and resistance to fatty acids are formed from a thermoplastic polyblend of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), polyolefin (PO), and a graft copolymer of a polyolefin (PO-G). The thermoplastic polyblend contains a PO and PO-G (PO/PO-G) as a first continuous single phase, PVC and CPE as the second and third dispersed phases, and the relative amounts of the components are chosen so that there is, at most, an equal amount by weight of PO and PO-G each of which may be present in an amount as high as 40 parts by weight when the PVC is present in an amount in the range from 40 to 70 parts, so as to provide a mechanically compatible polyblend without miscibility or chemical compatibility. Further, a glass fiber reinforced (GFR) polyblend of PVC/CPE/PO/PO-G having a HDT of at least 95.degree. C. and sufficient thermoformability to form the desired article has excellent notched impact strength. In the GFR polyblend the fibers are preferably long, at least 3 mm, and from 10-20 microns in diameter. The high HDT is obtained provided only if both co-compatibilizers and glass fibers are present in the reinforced composite.

A method for determining the approximate value of the internal porosity of a powder is set forth wherein a quick determination is achieved by measuring the maximum drawing force of an object such as a plate being withdrawn from within a bed of the powder, and repeating the removal of the object at least one additional time from a more compacted powder bed and utilizing the values obtained to solve simultaneous equations. The process is particularly suitable with regard to determining the internal porosity of polyvinyl chloride powders.
