A slider for a data storage device may include a trailing pad comprising a recording head, an outer surface, and an inner surface, wherein the outer surface is at the media-adjacent level and the inner surface is at the first recessed level. The slider may further include particle-blocking structure comprising a hole in the inner surface of the trailing pad, wherein a bottom surface of the hole is at the second recessed level, and an island blocker situated within the hole, wherein a media-facing surface of the island blocker is at the media-adjacent level, wherein the recording head is situated between the island blocker and a trailing edge of the slider. Also disclosed are data storage devices comprising sliders having particle-blocking structures comprising a hole and an island blocker. Also disclosed are methods of manufacturing sliders having particle-blocking structures comprising a hole and an island blocker.

A multi-slope load/unload ramp for a hard disk drive includes an inner first portion having a non-horizontal first slope and an adjacent outer second portion having a different non-horizontal second slope. The first slope may be steeper than the second slope, and the ramp may further include a third portion adjacent to the second portion and also having a third slope steeper than the second slope, with the ramp configured for positioning the first and second portions to overlap the disk while the third segment may be in part outside the disk. The second slope may be steeper than the first slope, with the ramp configured for positioning the first portion to overlap the disk while the second portion may be in part outside of the disk. Hence, any slider rebound from the steeper portions would occur outside of the disk and avoid a slider-disk crash.

Disclosed herein are sliders with at least one notch-cut in the trailing pad, methods of making them, and data storage devices comprising them. In some embodiments, a slider comprises a leading-edge surface, a trailing-edge surface, and an air-bearing surface (ABS) that includes a trailing pad situated closer to the trailing-edge surface than to the leading-edge surface, wherein the trailing pad comprises at least one notch-cut (e.g., two notch-cuts) in a trailing side of the trailing pad. The at least one notch-cut provides higher pressure at the recording head situated in the trailing pad and higher thermal flight control efficiency without a commensurate increase in touch-down power. As a result, the temperature around the recording head is lower than without the at least one notch-cut, thereby improving the lifetime of the recording head and data storage device.

Disclosed herein are embodiments of sliders in which the length of the slider is less than or equal to its width. Also disclosed are data storage devices (e.g., hard disk drives) comprising such sliders. The sliders may include one or more air-bearing surface features to compensate for the lower aspect ratio and to meet performance targets (fly height, roll stiffness, etc.). Such features may include, for example, a trailing-edge pad (which may include an efficiency-flattening hole), a first cavity between a first side of the trailing-edge pad and a first side edge, and a non-intersecting second cavity between a second side of the trailing-edge pad and a second side edge. A slider may also or alternatively include a leading pad and, in some embodiments, a particle trapping structure between the leading pad and the slider's leading edge.

Disclosed here is a ramp for receiving a lift tab of a hard disk drive. The ramp comprises a first side and a second side, where the first side is spaced apart from the second side. The ramp also comprises an inclined surface along which the lift tab slides as it moves in a first direction to remove a read/write head from a disk of the hard disk drive. The inclined surface inclines from a leading edge of the ramp to an intermediate edge of the ramp in the first direction. The inclined surface has a width that is generally perpendicular to the first direction and extends from the first side to the second side. The inclined surface has a width that is generally perpendicular to the first direction and extends from the first side to the second side. The tapered portion defines an oblique angle relative to the first direction.

A novel head includes an air bearing surface having a trailing pad adjacent the read transducer and lying in a primary plane. The air bearing surface includes a sub-ambient pressure cavity recessed from the primary plane by at least 500 nm. At least one leading pad is disposed upstream of the sub-ambient pressure cavity and has a leading pad surface in the primary plane. A moat is disposed upstream of the leading pad and is recessed from the primary plane by at least 500 nm. The moat continuously spans the entire width of the slider. A particle fence in the primary plane is disposed immediately upstream of the moat and adjacent the leading face. The particle fence continuously laterally spans at least 70% of the width of the slider.

A head for use in an information storage device includes a novel ABS, and a transducer with a heating element. The ABS includes a transducer pad that includes a surface in a first plane. The ABS also includes a pressure-relief trough that is recessed from the first plane by at least 0.1 microns and has an upstream breadth of no more than one fourth of the total length of the slider. The pressure-relief trough is disposed immediately upstream of the transducer pad and continuously spans the total width of the transducer pad. The ABS also includes a flow-diversion dam that has a dam surface that lies in the first plane. The dam surface continuously spans the total width of the transducer pad. The dam surface is disposed immediately upstream of the pressure-relief trough and generally downstream of a sub-ambient pressure cavity.

A head for use in a magnetic hard disk drive or other information storage device includes a novel ABS. The novel ABS includes an inter-cavity dam that is disposed between at least a portion of a cavity and a trailing pad. The inter-cavity dam is spaced longitudinally from the trailing pad by at least one thirtieth of the slider length. The inter-cavity dam includes an OD dam surface and an ID dam surface, with a slider-bisecting longitudinal plane passing between a majority of the OD dam surface and a majority of the ID dam surface. The OD dam surface is recessed from the first plane by an OD dam recession, and the ID dam surface is recessed from the first plane by an ID dam recession that is not equal to the OD dam recession.

A transducer for a disk drive head includes a pole tip protrusion (PTP) compensation layer disposed proximate to a write element of the head to at least partially offset the effect of pole tip protrusion. The PTP compensation layer can be above, below, or within the write element. Suitable materials for the PTP compensation layer include zirconium oxide ceramics characterized by negative coefficients of thermal expansion such as ZrMoO.

A head for use in a magnetic hard disk drive or other information storage device includes a novel air bearing surface. The novel air bearing surface includes two leading pads separated by a longitudinal channel, and a trailing pad. The leading pads and trailing pad each include a major surface that lies in a first plane. A side pad, laterally spaced from the trailing pad, includes a major surface that lies in a second plane that is parallel to the first plane but that is offset from the first plane by a shallow recess depth in the range of 0.5 microinches to two microinches. The side pad also includes a major surface that lies in a third plane that is parallel to the second plane but that is offset from the first plane by standard recess depth in the range of three to five microinches.

A novel air bearing can be used in a magnetic hard disk drive or other information storage device. The novel air bearing includes a central cavity having a bottom surface, a leading pad adjacent to the central cavity, a trailing center pad having a top surface, and two inter-projection step regions. The trailing center pad has an aft region adjacent to the transducer and three projections extending from the aft region towards the central cavity. The central cavity separates the three projections from the leading pad. Each of the two inter-projection step regions lies at least partially between the projections, and each includes a surface at an intermediate level between a level of the top surface and the level of the bottom surface. The novel air bearing may be adequately insensitive to one or more factors affecting flying height variation in a micro-drive utilizing ramp load/unload of the slider.

A slider is formed of an air bearing surface coated with a wear limiting coating that substantially limits surface wear of the air bearing surface encountered in proximity recording. The wear limiting coating is comprised of a wear inhibiting layer formed on the air bearing surface and a sacrificial layer formed on the wear inhibiting layer. The two coatings of the wear limiting coating have different mechanical properties so that the sacrificial layer is burnished, exposing the wear inhibiting layer. This design substantially limits the surface wear of the air bearing surface typically encountered in proximity recording, resulting in less debris accumulation, which could otherwise adversely affect the performance of the proximity recording head. This self-limiting burnishing action overcomes the flying height variation due to manufacturing tolerances and provides extremely small and uniform magnetic spacing, which greatly enhances the proximity recording. Moreover, the burnishing action also achieves an improved flying stability and a reduction in the altitude sensitivity.

An air bearing surface for read/write head of a magnetic disk drive is disclosed. The air bearing surface includes a trailing edge pad and a leading edge pad with trailing portions. A cavity is defined between the trailing edge pad and the trailing portions of the leading edge pad. A cavity patch is disposed within the cavity. The cavity patch can be disposed within the cavity towards one side of the read/write head.
