A red-emitting luminescent material that belongs to the class of nitridosilicates and is doped with at least one activator D, in particular Eu, wherein the material is a modified D-doped alkaline earth nitridosilicate MSiN, where M=one or more elements belonging to the group Sr, Ca, Ba, with the nitridosilicate having been stabilized by an oxidic or oxinitridic&#x2014;in particular alkaline earth&#x2014;phase.

A thermally stable phosphor made of the M-Si&#x2014;O&#x2014;N system, having a cation M and an activator D, M being represented by Ba or Sr alone or as a mixture and optionally also being combined with at least one other element from the group Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu. The phosphor is activated with Eu or Ce or Tb alone or as a mixture, optionally in codoping with Mn or Yb. The activator D partially replaces the cation M. The phosphor is produced from the charge stoichiometry MO&#x2014;SiO&#x2014;SiNwith an increased oxygen content relative to the known phosphor MSiON:D, where MO is an oxidic compound.

A phosphor of the alpha-sialon type is provided, wherein the general empirical formula is M1SiAlON:D; where M1 is one or more elements from the group Li, Mg, Ca, Y and the lanthanoids with the exception of Ce and La; D is a co-doping consisting of M2 and Mn, where M2=one or more elements from the group Ce, Pr, Eu, Tb, Yb and Er; in this situation q=0 to 2.5 and p=0.5 to 4 is chosen.

A phosphor from the class of nitridosilicates from the M-Al&#x2014;Si&#x2014;N system, comprising a cation M, wherein M is represented by Ca alone or is represented by a mixture of Ca with at least one further element from the group Ba, Sr, Mg, Zn, Cd, Li, Na, Cu, wherein the phosphor is activated with at least one element from the group Eu, Ce which partly replaces M, characterized in that the phosphor forms a phase that is to be assigned to the system M3N2-AlN-Si3N4, wherein the atomic ratio of the constituents M:Al&#x2267;0.375 and the atomic ratio Si/Al&#x2267;1.4.
