Devices, systems and methods for biological sensing and communication using optogenetics and electronics are described. One example method includes generating a light beam incident on multiple regions in a device, wherein each region comprises an optogenetic system to generate, upon interacting with the light beam, biosensors, wherein an interaction between the biosensors and stimulus molecules in each region is associated with a threshold for a production of an output molecule or an alteration of an output property of the output molecule, the biosensors, or the stimulus molecules, wherein the production or the alteration is based on a value associated with an information source, detecting an output received from one or more of the multiple regions corresponding to the output molecule or the output property in that region, and generating an electric signal associated therewith, and processing the electrical signal to determine the value associated with the information source.

Biological sensing and communication using optogenetics and electronics

A long-range radio tag uses radio energy harvesting and separates the functions of radiofrequency excitation and radio tag reading such that the reader may be displaced at a substantial distance from the radio tags. The ability of the radio tags to communicate with a distant reader is further enhanced by a query system which allows a highly simplified message to be transmitted by the radio tags, as flexibly defined by a received query. The use of addressing and frequency multiplexing system allows a large number of tags to be serviced by a single reader.

Long distance wireless radio tag with RF energy harvesting

A low-power transmission system for periodically transmitted data communicates the periodic data as an interval between two transmitted anchor symbols when the transmitter and associated circuitry are shut down. Meaningful power savings for short data words is obtained by use of a star topology allowing elimination of the receiver power consumption. Multi-bit anchor symbols provide improved error detection and the separation of simultaneous transmission from multiple transmitters by a single receiver.
