The cylinder head gasket includes a gasket layer which presents an inner periphery that surrounds an opening. The gasket layer has a first thickness adjacent the inner periphery. A combustion seal is positioned in the opening and extends circumferentially around an axis. The combustion seal is joined with the inner periphery of the gasket layer. The combustion seal has a height that is greater than the first thickness of the gasket layer. The combustion seal includes at least one seal body which is generally C-shaped as viewed in cross-section and is resiliently flexible for maintaining fluid tight seals with the cylinder head and the engine block. The C-shaped seal body presents a pocket which faces away from the inner periphery of the of the gasket layer for receiving combustion gasses during use to improve the fluid tight seals established with the cylinder head and the engine block.

Cylinder head gasket

A metal gasket includes embossments that exhibit essentially full functional recovery and full retained internal stress at temperatures up to about 1000&#xb0; F. which is made from sheet material that is cold rolled and whose embossments are work hardened without any post embossment heat treating that would act to harden the material. This material may also receive a precipitation hardening heat treatment prior to being embossed. The gasket materials include alloys having greater than about 18% Ni, greater than about 14% Cr, from about 0.1 to 10% of at least one of Mo, Ti, V, Al, Co, Nb, Ta or Cu and the balance Fe with incidental impurities, which are cold rolled without any post embossment heat treating that would act to harden the material.

Metal gasket

An elastomeric seal (), such as a shaft seal for automotive vehicle applications, includes an elastomeric compound () chemically coupled to a metal sealing ring () and is formed without an oven post curing step. The elastomeric seal () provides exceptional physical properties, similar to those of elastomeric seals of the prior art formed with an oven post curing step. The elastomeric seal () has an elastic modulus of 6.0 MPa to 13.0 MPa and a tensile strength of 11.1 MPa to 14.8 MPa. The elastomeric compound () includes 52.0 to 68.0 wt. % fluoroelastomer, 20.0 to 35.0 wt. % calcium silicate, and 5.0 to 15.0 wt. % diatomite. The elastomeric compound () is fully cured and chemically coupled to the metal sealing ring () during the compression or injection molding step, and thus an oven post curing step is not required.

Elastomeric shaft seal formed without oven post curing

A compression sensor gasket assembly and method of construction thereof is provided. The compression sensor gasket assembly includes a gasket body having opposite sealing surfaces extending between an outer periphery and an inner periphery with the inner periphery bounding a through opening. The gasket body has a passage extending from the outer periphery through the inner periphery and a pressure sensor assembly releasably attached to the gasket body in the passage and being configured to sense pressure within the through opening. The pressure sensor assembly can be removed from the gasket body in service without having to disassemble clamped members from clamped abutment with the gasket assembly. Further, the pressure sensor assembly can be routed over a curved path extending between the outer and inner peripheries to navigate about features that may be present in the gasket body.

Compression sensor gasket assembly and method of construction

A method of fabricating a PTFE seal element and rotary shaft seal assembly therewith. The method includes providing a PTFE seal element and a vacuum chamber having electrodes therein. Next, placing the PTFE seal element on one electrode and drawing a vacuum pressure in the chamber and introducing a first process gas into the chamber. Further, applying a high frequency signal to the electrodes and producing a discharge plasma and etching and chemically modifying a surface of the PTFE seal element with the discharge plasma. Then, purging the vacuum chamber with a second process gas and restoring the vacuum chamber to an atmospheric pressure. Thereafter, rinsing the seal element and applying an adhesion promoter to the etched and chemically modified surface. Lastly, attaching the etched and chemically modified surface of the PTFE seal element to the carrier by molding an elastomeric material between the seal element and the carrier.

Method of fabricating a PTFE seal element and a shaft seal assembly therewith

The subject invention provides a gasket for sealing multiple fluids and a method of forming the gasket. The gasket includes a carrier, a first elastomeric material, and a second elastomeric material different than the first elastomeric material. The first and second elastomeric materials are disposed in contact with the carrier in a flowable state such that the first and the second materials flow together to form a third elastomeric material comprising a mixture of the first and second elastomeric materials. The first and second elastomeric materials include cure systems that are compatible to ensure sufficient bonding within the third elastomeric material. Adhesive materials that are compatible with each of the first, second, and third elastomeric materials and the carrier are used to bond the elastomeric materials to the carrier.

Gasket for sealing multiple fluids

A method for reducing fuel permeation through gasketed joints in an internal combustion engine () includes surface treating the gaskets in a halogenated medium before placing them into service. A low-cost elastomer such as acrylic, EPDM or HNBR, can be used for the gasket body. The halogenated medium may comprise either a liquid bath or a gaseous bath, into which the gasket is immersed. The halogenated medium bath is excited by heating to accelerate the halogenation process. A gasket treated according to this invention possesses a chemically altered exterior surface which substantially enhances its fuel permeability resistance at relatively low cost.

A multilayer metal gasket, such as a multilayer steel head gasket, for an internal combustion engine has upper and lower functional layers and at least one intermediate layer. At least one of these layers has a circumferential compression control feature in the form of a protrusion or groove which varies in thickness or depth, respectively, around its circumference. The variable thickness of the compression control feature enables uniform sealing pressure on the sealing surfaces of the gasket.

Enhanced multilayer metal gasket

A shaft seal/position sensor module assembly includes a carrier body that is mountable on a shaft housing about an opening through which a rotatable shaft extends. A sleeve is mountable on the shaft and carries a multi-pole encoder ring having a radially outwardly facing sensor surface. A magneto-resistive sensor is mounted on said carrier body in position to communicate with said sensor surface of said encoder ring.

Integrated sensor-seal module for detecting angular position of a crankshaft

A flanged cover assembly includes a cover having a wall portion, a lateral attachment flange surrounding the wall portion extending outwardly therefrom and a plurality of spaced flange bores extending through the flange from a upper surface to a lower surface. The bores are adapted to receive a corresponding plurality of fasteners which are adapted to be inserted through the bores and secure the cover to a base. The invention also includes a spring retainer which is adapted to extend along at least a portion of the outer surface of the lateral attachment flange. The spring retainer has a plurality of spaced retainer bores corresponding to at least two of the spaced flange bores and at least one shaped spring portion that is adapted to contact the upper surface of the lateral attachment flange mediate the spaced flange bores. The assembly may also include a cover gasket having a plurality of bores corresponding to the plurality of spaced flange bores and spaced retainer bores. The shaped spring portion is adapted to apply a spring force to the lateral attachment flange when the fasteners are inserted through the plurality of spaced retainer bores and the plurality of spaced flange bores and used to secure the cover and the gasket to the base.

A head gasket () which acts, when clamped between a cylinder head () and a block () in a liquid cooled internal combustion engine (), to form a seal around the combustion chambers (). A coolant flow path () routes through the engine () and its directed, in part, through the cylinder head () and the block (), with a corresponding flow opening () formed in the head gasket () to accommodate flow of liquid coolant in a normal direction. The head gasket () includes a one-way valve () positioned in the flow opening () to allow the flow of coolant in a normal direction but to prevent the flow of liquid coolant through the flow opening () in an abnormal, reverse direction. The one-way valve () includes movable gate () which may be biased against a valve seat () in a normally closed condition. The one-way valve () can be made as a loose piece article of manufacture which is held in flow opening () by self-locking retention clips.

A hydrodynamic PTFE seal for a rotating part including a first portion supported by a flexible, elastomeric member and a second portion extending from the first portion past the elastomeric member along the rotating part. The second or trailing portion of the seal is concentrically disposed about the rotating part. The first portion of the seal attached to the elastomeric member is also concentrically disposed around the rotating part. The seal can also include a living hinge portion disposed between the first and second portions. The first portion, the second portion and the living hinge portion can jointly define a continuous sealing surface.
