Viscosity assemblies may be used to determine the viscosity of a sample fluid at a surface location under one or more downhole conditions prior to pumping or flowing of the sample fluid downhole. A viscosity assembly may include a bob assembly disposed in a container that includes a bob disposed about a magnet rotor that rotates when a shear force is applied by the flow of the sample fluid in the container. A stator coil may receive a control signal that induces a force or a voltage that causes the magnet rotor to rotate the bob by a predetermined distance to position the bob from the rotated position back to the initial position.

Systems and methods for measuring the viscosity of a fluid may comprise a rotor cup having an inner chamber; a first bob rotatably disposed within a first region of the inner chamber; and a second bob rotatably disposed within a second region of the inner chamber, wherein the second bob rotates relative to the first bob based on a difference in viscosity of fluid in the first region and the second region.

The present disclosure describes a dynamic geo-stationary actuation technique that may be incorporated into a rotary steerable system. An example method described herein may include receiving a first angular orientation of a rotating housingdisposed in a borehole. A desired drilling direction for the drill bitmay also be received. A system for measuring the viscosity of a fluid comprises a rotor cup; a bob disposed within the rotor cup and having shaft rotatably coupled to the rotor cup; a bearing connecting the shaft of the bob to the rotor cup; a magnetic coupling comprising a first magnetic element connected to the shaft of the bob and a second magnetic element disposed outside the rotor cup adjacent to the first magnetic element; and an inertial measurement unit disposed adjacent to the second magnetic element which is capable of sensing rotation of the magnetic coupling.

Viscosity measurement

A fiber optic sensor is disposed in the elastomer of the stator of the mud motor in order to sense elastomer strain while drilling. The frequencies of micro stalls and stick slips are measured from the fiber optic sensor data by classification using thresholds or by converting time-domain measurements from the fiber optic sensor data to frequencies. For example, the frequencies are produced by accumulating a histogram over an interval of time or by computing a Discrete Fourier Transform over an interval of time. A plurality of fiber optic sensors also can sense angular position of the rotor of the mud motor for correlation of the micro stalls and stick slips with the angular position. The measurements of the micro stalls and stick slips are used to select remedial action such as changes in drilling parameters.

Systems and methods for measuring the viscosity of a fluid comprises an oscillation cylinder having an inner surface, wherein the oscillation cylinder includes a fluid; a fixed piston having a first stopper disposed within the oscillation cylinder and forming a seal with the inner surface; an adjustable piston having a second stopper disposed within the oscillation cylinder and forming a seal with the inner surface; a chamber defined between the first stopper and second stopper; a bob formed within the chamber having a sensor which measures an axial shear force induced by the oscillating cylinder which is indicative of the apparent viscosity of the fluid in the chamber; and a motor capable of linearly translating the oscillation cylinder.

Roll reduction system for rotary steerable system. A well drilling system includes a tubular housing that attaches inline in a drill string and a bit drive shaft supported to rotate in the housing by a roll reduction system. The roll reduction system includes a first gear carried by the housing to rotate relative to the housing and coupled to rotate with the bit drive shaft, and a second gear carried by the housing to rotate relative to the housing and coupled to the first gear to rotate in an opposite direction to the first gear.

A system includes a shaft and a light path surface coupled to or integrated with the shaft. The light path surface is displaced as a function of twist angle at a point along the shaft. The system also includes a sensor configured to measure the light path length that varies according to displacement of the light path surface. The system also includes a processing unit that determines a twist angle value for the point along the shaft based on the measured light path length.

A well tool drilling tool can include a torque transfer mechanism with an inner mandrel, an outer housing, and at least one pawl which displaces radially and thereby selectively permits and prevents relative rotation between the inner mandrel and the outer housing. An assembly for inclusion between a drill bit and a drill string, the assembly having an overrunning clutch mechanism that disengages the drill bit from the drill string during the 'slip' portion of a stick-slip cycle to allow the drill bit to freely rotate faster than the drill string. The assembly further includes a rotational vibration dampener operatively connected between the overrunning clutch and the drill bit. The vibration dampener may include a fluid chamber with viscous fluid or restrictions to fluid flow to effect dampening. During normal operation, the one-way overrunning clutch remains engaged to transfer torque between the drill string and bit, while the torsional damper is in its maximum displaced position to transfer the load. During slip, the drill bit is disengaged until its speed is lower than the drill string speed. Torsional vibration dampener dampens sudden impulse force of the overrunning clutch re-engaging.

A turbine may be within the first housing in selective fluid communication with a bore of the first housing. A biasing mechanism may be coupled to the movable joint and the turbine. The biasing mechanism may alter an angle between a first longitudinal axis of the first housing and a second longitudinal axis of the second housing by altering an orientation of the movable joint.

An automated calcimeter system may comprise a reaction chamber; a pressure sensor coupled to the reaction chamber and configured to measure pressure in the reaction chamber; a pump coupled to the reaction chamber; piping coupled to the pump, wherein the piping is of sufficient length to store a preselected volume of acid; and a processor configured to instruct the pump to deliver the preselected volume of acid to the reaction chamber while also drawing a volume of gas from the reaction chamber, wherein the volume of gas is equivalent to the preselected volume of acid.
