A copolymer in dispersion or redispersible powder form which is stabilized by a protective colloid and has a glass transition temperature of -40.degree. to 10.degree. C. and an ethylene content of at least 30% by weight, based on the total amount of monomers, with a heterogeneous build-up of the copolymer particles, including a first polymer phase, which includes vinyl acetate and &gt;40% by weight of ethylene, based on the total amount of monomers in this phase, and a last copolymer phase, which includes vinyl acetate and 5 to 40% by weight of ethylene, based on the total amount of monomers in this phase, is suitable, for example, as a binder in building materials.

Heterogeneous vinyl acetate/ethylene dispersion

Aqueous dispersions prepared by polymerization of vinyl acetate, ethylene, and comonomers selected from the group consisting of vinyl esters of aliphatic (C.sub.3 -C.sub.18)-carboxylic acids, acrylic acid esters, methacrylic acid esters, and maleic acid diesters of aliphatic (C.sub.1 -C.sub.18)-alcohols in the presence of 0.05 to 0.95% by weight of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acids, 0 to 0.95% by weight of methacrylic acid esters or acrylic acid esters which carry epoxide or hydroxyl groups, and 1.5 to 20% by weight of cellulose ether, to form a copolymer having a glass transition temperature of -40.degree. to 0.degree. C. and comprising a cellulose ether in at least partly grafted form, are suitable as adhesives, for example, for gluing polyolefins.

Aqueous dispersions for adhesives

Process for preparing dispersions stabilized with protective colloid using sulfonato-containing polyvinyl acetals as the protective colloid in the preparation of the dispersions, if desired in combination with additional emulsifiers or additional protective colloids. The dispersions exhibit a pH-dependent viscosity and are suitable, for example, for coating and bonding substrates and as rheology modifiers and binders and for use in solid paints.
