The present invention relates to a lubricant and/or clean-out composition comprising: (a) a dispersant component comprising a succinimide dispersant and/or a quaternary ammonium salt dispersant; (b) a carrier fluid component; and (c) an optional corrosion inhibitor, as well as methods of cleaning out deposits in a lubricant system, such as a hydraulic system, using such compositions.

The invention provides a lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and an amine-functionalized additive, wherein the amine-functionalized additive is derived from an amine having at least 3 aromatic groups, at least one &#x2014;NH2 functional group, and at least 2 secondary or tertiary amino groups. The invention further provides for the additive to have improved thermal and oxidative stability modifying properties. The lubricating composition may include circulating oils, turbine oils, hydraulic fluids, transformer oils and greases as well as others that require good oxidation stability and good rust inhibition properties.

A lubricating oil composition containing in oxidation inhibitor package, a rust inhibitor and metal deactivator is used in industrial fluids. The oxidation package contains alkylated diphenylamines, substituted hydrocarbyl monosulphides and optionally sterically hindered phenols. The rust inhibitor contains at least 1 of alkylated amine salts of alkylphosphoric acid, dialkyldithiophosphoric acid or hydrocarbyl aryl sulphonic acids. The metal deactivator is 5-methylbenzotriazole.

A phosphorus free or a low phosphorus containing lubricant composition is provided by formulating the composition with an additive of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are independently alkyl of 1 to about 7 carbons, aryl, aralkyl or together form an alicyclic or heteroalicyclic radical in which the ring is completed through the nitrogen; X is O or S; a is 1 or 2; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently H, alkyl or aryl; and Z is ##STR2## wherein R.sub.5 is hydrogen, alkyl, or aralkyl, and ##STR3## wherein Y is H, OH, R.sub.6 where R.sub.6 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, OR.sub.6, OR.sub.7 --OH, where R.sub.7 is alkylene of 1 to about 7 carbon atoms, and NR.sub.8 R.sub.9 where R.sub.8 and R.sub.9 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, cycloaliphatic, heteroalicyclic or together form an alicyclic or heteroalicyclic radical in which the ring is completed through the nitrogen; with the proviso that when a is 1, Y is not OR.sub.6. These additives impart improved extreme pressure and anti-wear properties to lubricant compositions.
