Mixed matrix membranes that are capable of separation and purification of gas mixtures are disclosed. These membranes comprise polymers that include dispersed therein nanomolecular sieve particles. In a preferred embodiment, the nanomolecular sieve particles contain attached functional groups to prevent their agglomeration.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer mixed matrix membranes (MOF-MMMs) have been prepared by dispersing high surface area MOFs (e.g. IRMOF-1) into a polymer matrix (e.g. Matrimid 5218). The MOFs allow the polymer to infiltrate the pores of the MOFs, which improves the interfacial and mechanical properties of the polymer and in turn affects permeability. Pure gas permeation tests show the incorporation of 20 wt-% of IRMOF-1 in Matrimid 5218 polyimide matrix results in 280% improvement in COpermeability without a loss of CO/CHselectivity compared to those of the pure Matrimid 5218 membrane. This type of MOF-MMMs has significantly improved gas separation performance with dramatically high COpermeability (&#x3e;35 barrer) and higher than 29 CO/CHselectivity at 50&#xb0; C. under 100 psig pressure, which are attractive candidates for practical gas separation applications such as COremoval from natural gas.

Metal organic framework&#x2014;polymer mixed matrix membranes

A process for separating one chiral compound from a mixture of chiral compounds is disclosed. The separation process involves using a chiral stationary phase (CSP) which comprises a chiral organic material deposited on an amorphous silica support having a unimodal distribution of pore sizes in the range of about 300 .ANG. to about 25,000 .ANG. and a surface area of less than about 30 m.sup.2 /g.

Process for separating chiral compounds using a unimodal large pore

The chiral isomers of 3-hydroxytetrahyrofuran are separated by means of liquid chromatography using a stationary phase comprising a substituted polysaccharide carbamate. The separation may be performed using a simulated moving bed adsorbent system. Suitable mobile phase materials comprise a mixture of a light paraffin and a low molecular weight aliphatic alcohol such as a mixture of n-hexane and ethanol. Amylose is the preferred polysaccharide.

Chiral stationary phases perform well when the underlying support for the chiral organic material is coated onto a silica pore widened by a hydrothermal treatment. The resulting silica is amorphous with a unimodal distribution of large pores. A variety of chiral stationary phases perform well and are distinguished, inter alia, by the treatment, if any, prior to coating the chiral organic material.

A processing step is added to an existing catalytic reforming unit to increase the yield of aromatic product. The additional processing comprises separation of product from the reforming unit into an aromatic concentrate and a low-octane recycle stream which is upgraded by aromatization. The separation preferably is effected using a large-pore molecular sieve, and the aromatization with a nonacidic L-zeolite contained within the hydrogen circuit of the existing catalytic reforming unit.

Silicalite with increased hydrophobicity may be made by steaming silicalite in an atmosphere of at least 10% water vapor at temperatures of 650.degree.-850.degree. C. When used as monodisperse spheres with a diameter in the range 1-20 microns such ultrahydrophobic silicalite is an excellent adsorbent for chromatographic separation of polar materials, including fatty acids, at both the analytical level and preparative level using simulated moving bed techniques.

Resolution of a mixture of organic materials by simulated moving bed chromatography using a weakly interacting adsorbent as a stationary phase can be routinely effected with a liquid mobile phase characterized by atypically low values of k' with recoveries of at least 95% and a purity of at least 95%. In particular, values in the range 0.1&lt;k'&lt;1.0 are recommended with a resulting savings in mobile phase consumption, inventory, and recovery.

Resolution of a racemic mixture of organic materials by simulated moving bed chromatography using a chiral stationary phase can be routinely effected at atypically low values of k' with recoveries of at least 95% and an optical purity of at least 95%. The present invention relates in general to highly siliceous zeolitic molecular sieve adsorbent compositions having reduced catalytic activity and to the process for preparing such compositions. The number of acid sites in the so-called silica molecular sieves is very low, but exhibit a disproportionately high acid activity. In a variety of adsorptive separation applications in which the hydrophobic character of these molecular sieves is important, undesirable catalytic conversion of one or more of the adsorbates is frequently encountered. This acid activity is effectively eliminated by incorporating a stoichiometric excess with respect to the aluminum content of the molecular sieve of an alkali metal compound into the molecular sieve followed by calcining the loaded silicalite at temperatures of at least 750.degree.C. The adsorbent is particularly useful in separations of materials which are subject to catalytically initiated reactions, e.g., olefins and alcohols.
