Methods and systems are provides for measuring multi-dimensional sensing information for identification purposes. The identity of one or more substances is determined through analysis of multidimensional data that can include, among others, intrinsic information as well as extrinsic information. The method for identification of a substance comprises utilizing pattern recognition to form descriptors to identify characteristics of the substance. A system and computer program for performing analysis of the multidimensional data are also described.

Measuring and analyzing multi-dimensional sensory information for identification purposes

The present invention provides methods for fabricating a sensor on a substrate having a pair of electrodes. The methods are especially amenable to broad variations amongst individual sensor on a single substrate. The intra-sensor variation within the array can be achieved in various fashions. The method provide intra-sensor variation using quantitative and qualitative differences in each sensor.

Sensor fabricating method

A sensor or a sensor array connected to an electrical measuring apparatus is disclosed. In one embodiment, at least one sensor contains a layer of conductive modified particles which forms an electrical pathway or electrical circuit between two electrodes which are connected to an electrical measuring apparatus. In another embodiment, the first sensor contains at least one region of a nonconducting material and also a region that contains one or more modified particles. The modified particles are preferably conductive. An electrical path exists though the regions of the nonconducting material and the region containing the modified particles. The modified particles are conductive and more preferably are pigment particles such as modified carbon black, wherein the modified particles have attached at least one organic group. Alternatively, or in addition, the modified particle can be an aggregate having a carbon phase and a silicon-containing species phase and/or a metal-containing species phase wherein the aggregate optionally has attached at least one organic group. A sensor array for detecting an analyte in a fluid is also disclosed wherein each sensor emits a different response signature to an analyte wherein at least one of the sensors contains at least the modified particles as described above. Also, the present invention relates to a method for detecting the presence of an analyte in a fluid. The method involves contacting one or more sensors as described above with the analyte to generate a response and detecting the response with a detector that is operatively associated with each sensor in order to detect the presence of an analyte. Other advantages and embodiments are further described.

Sensors with improved properties

The present invention relates to a sensor array for detecting an analyte in a fluid, comprising first and second sensors formed by chemically sensitive resitors, wherein the first sensor comprises a region of aligned conductive material; or where each of the sensors comprises alternating regions of nonconductive regions and aligned conductive regions with each resistor providing an electrical path through both the nonconductive region and the aligned conductive region, while each sensor manifests a different electrical resistance during contact with sample fluids having different analyte concentrations via the monitoring arrangement of having the sensors electrically connected to an electrical measuring apparatus. The aligned conductive particle material is aligned by exposure to either of an electric, magnetic, optical, photo-electric, electromagnetic or mechanical field, which serves to improve signal to noise ratio of vapor sensors allowing Lower Detection Limits for vapors being sensed. Such Lower Detection Limits allow for identification of lower concentrations of hazardous material and is advantageous in medical applications, such as detection of disease states in a patient.

Aligned particle based sensor elements

The present invention provides methods for detecting the presence of an analyte indicative of various medical conditions, including halitosis, periodontal disease and other diseases are also disclosed.

Medical applications of artificial olfactometry

Devices and methods are disclosed that are effective to produce reliable vapor measurements in the presence of drift. In certain instances the sensor module is mounted externally on a housing. In other instances, the sensor module contains a first sensor element incorporating a first array of sensors and a second sensor element incorporating a second array of sensors wherein both sensor elements are mounted externally on the housing. In other embodiments, the present invention relates to mapping an x-y surface for detection of an analyte, the method includes moving in tandem at least two sensor arrays separated by a distance &ldquo;d&rdquo; across an x-y surface to produce a plurality of responses and analyzing the responses to map the x-y surface for detection of an analyte. Moreover, the present invention provides a sensor module, such as in a handheld device, comprising at least two pneumatic vapor paths and at least two sensor arrays. The dual pneumatic train allows rapid sensing as it increases the duty cycle frequency.

Referencing and rapid sampling in artificial olfactometry

The invention provides a magnetorheological grease composition which contains magnetic-responsive particles, a carrier fluid and a thickening agent. The composition according to the invention contains an effective amount of thickening agent to provide a composition of proper consistency with good properties and little settling of the magnetic-responsive particles.

Magnetorheological fluid

A magnetorheological fluid that includes magnetic-responsive particles, a carrier fluid and an organomolybdenum. The organomolybdenum preferably includes at least one molybdenum atom bonded to at least one organic moiety wherein the organic moiety can be derived from a precursor selected from the group consisting of a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon, an aromatic hydrocarbon, an oxygen-containing compound, a nitrogen-containing compound and a compound containing more than one functional group.

Organomolybdenum-containing magnetorheological fluid

A magnetorheological fluid that includes magnetic-responsive particles, a carrier fluid and at least one thiophosphorus and/or thiocarbamate additive. Preferably, the thiophosphorus or thiocarbamate additive is a metallic dialkyldithiophosphate or a metallic dialkyldithiocarbamate.

A structural adhesive composition containing an epoxy compound, an amine hardener and a hydroxy-substituted aromatic compound having a pKa ranging from about 5 to 9.7 and a boiling point greater than about 210.degree. C. The utilization of a hydroxy-substituted aromatic compound having a pKa and a boiling point within the stated ranges provides for an adhesive composition which develops significant green strength, undergoes minimal sinkage during the bonding and curing process, and is capable of withstanding high temperature conditions.
