Improved emulsion breakers in the form of polyol acrylate polymers in water/oil emulsions have relatively high polymer contents and low inversion viscosities. The emulsion breakers can be prepared by mixing together acrylate monomer, polyol, water, liquid petroleum product, and emulsifier, followed by homogenization of the mixture; the latter is then subjected to free radical polymerization to polymerize the polyol and monomer in situ within the mixture.

Preferably, the treating composition also includes an alcohol, and is used at a level of from about 1-10,000 ppm.

Improved desulfurization compositions are provided for removing substantial fractions of sulfur, sulfur complexes, and sulfur compounds from liquid hydrocarbons such as crude oil and fuels. The preferred compositions comprise respective quantities of an alkylphenol ethoxylate, an amine, and an alkali metal nitrite. The compositions may be contacted with liquid hydrocarbons to achieve high levels of desulfurization.

Compositions and methods for treating systems, especially oil and/or gas wells, characterized by metal sulfide deposits are provided. Compositions according to the invention generally comprise a thioacid, an amine salt, and a diphosphonic acid. Methods according to the invention may comprise introducing such composition into a system characterized by metal sulfide deposits, or alternatively, introducing into the system individual quantities of the composition components.
