Method and apparatus for deflashing a fiber reinforced plastic article are provided. The method features cutting the flash away from the article with an edge heated to a temperature of at least about 800.degree. F. (427.degree. C.). The apparatus features a cutting edge and means for heating the cutting edge to a temperature of at least about 800.degree. F. (427.degree. C.).

Deflashing method and apparatus

Method and apparatus for removing flash from an article are provided. The method features the steps of striking the flash with a first lash at least partially along the side of the lash with enough force to initiate separation of the flash from the article while simultaneously supporting the lash sufficiently to prevent the lash from bending sharply on itself and breaking; these steps are repeated until the flash has been completely separated from the article. The apparatus comprises at least one lash with sufficient support to prevent it from bending on itself and breaking, and means for rotating the lash about a central axis for contact with the flash.

Deflashing method

Method for removing protruding reinforcing fibers from the flash area of a deflashed, fiber reinforced plastic article are provided. The method features melting the protruding fibers off of the article without damaging the article itself. The apparatus features an elongated chamber for receiving the articles, means for passing the articles in series through the chamber, means for heating air to a temperature of at least about 800.degree. F. (427.degree. C.), and means for directing the heated air across the articles one at a time while the articles are passing through the chamber.

Method for removing protruding reinforcing fibers from a deflashed fiber

Method and apparatus for cutting elongated material into short lengths is provided. The method features the steps of compressing the elongated material at discrete intervals transversely; slightly tensioning the elongated material along its length between intervals; pressing the slightly tensioned elongated material between intervals against a cutting edge; and cutting the elongated material with the cutting edge. The apparatus features a pair of cooperating rolls rotating in opposite directions and between which the elongated material passes. The cutting roll has a plurality of radially extending cutting blades as well as a plurality of radially extending projections, at least one of the projections being located on each side of a cutting blade and extending further radially from the cutting roll than the blades. The second roll is formed of an elastic material and is engaged by the projections in succession to compress the elongated material therebetween.

Staple cutting for fiber reinforcement material

Method and apparatus of simultaneously cutting a plurality of different elongated materials into shorter lengths is provided. The method features the steps of continuously winding a coil of each of the materials about a common axis, each of the coils being separate from one another, while continuously cutting a layer of each of the materials into shorter lengths, and continuously transporting the shorter lengths away. The apparatus features a cutter reel with a plurality of radially spaced cutting blades which form in conjunction with a barrier at least two cutting zones which are separate from one another. The different types of elongated material are fed to the different cutting zones for cutting and removal.

Method of cutting elongated material using a cutter reel with spaced

An inline winder is provided for taking-up a rapidly advancing filament, especially a glassy alloy filament of indefinite length at constant speed directly from a high speed continuous forming process without tension isolation. The winder is inherently load-following and thus eliminates the need for any complex feedback control system. The winder comprises a winding reel rotatively driven by a synchronous-hysteresis electrical motor and selection means for independently adjusting voltage and frequency input to the motor. The method of using the winder comprises preadjusting the frequency input to initially synchronize winder and filament speeds and preadjusting voltage input to select winding torque and initial winding tension. A transfer device is also disclosed wherein winding is transferred uninterruptedly from a wound, rotating reel to an empty, rotating wheel.

Inline winder

Method and apparatus is provided for the inline string-up, in automatic fashion, of a rapidly advancing filament, particularly a glassy alloy strip, from a high speed continuous casting operation onto a rotating winding wheel. The leading segment of the advancing filament is passed into the nip of two counterrotating brush rollers 15 having a peripheral velocity exceeding that of the advancing filament to produce a sliding frictional tensioning of the filament. The brush rollers and engaged filament are then moved over the rotating winding wheel 28 to lay a segment of the advancing filament onto the rotating winding surface. A cut-and-grip device 8 associated with the winder is then actuated to cut the filament at the winding surface and to secure the filament onto the winder, whereupon winding of the advancing filament proceeds.

Winder string-up method and apparatus

This high speed yarn take-up system consists of a pneumatic injector nozzle rotatably mounted off-center of a single flighted rotating screw. Yarn is injected into the area exposed at the trailing edge of the screw and compressed and moved forward in a compression chamber by the feeding of the screw. A plastic tube is continuously formed around the compression chamber to receive the yarn mass as it discharges, thus forming a tube of indefinite unlimited length and from 1/4 to 4 inches or larger in diameter. The tube may contain a single end or multiple ends of yarn. The yarn can be removed from the tube at high speeds by simply slitting the plastic as the yarn is pulled from the package.

Method of unwinding

Screw jet pack for textile fibers

In an essentially horizontal totally enclosed cylindrical wiped-wall polymer reactor having an essentially horizontal polymer flow, a pool of polymer in its lower portion, and driven wheels to create high surface area in the polymer to facilitate evaporation of volatiles from the polymer, the improvement comprising a freewheeling drag wheel driven by the driven wheels, with a wiping means mounted on the driven wheels and actuated by the drag wheel to wipe the entire internal circumference of the cylindrical reactor. The drag wheel generates a force to urge the wiping means outward against the internal circumference of the reactor. The force is generated by the drag of the pool of polymer on the drag wheel. This keeps the wall of the reactor wiped with a fresh film of polymer. The process and apparatus is particularly adaptable to driven wheels and drag wheels eccentrically mounted in the reactor.

Wiped-wall reactor

The transfer tail apparatus of this invention comprises a tail forming string-up aid, a tail cutter, and tail storage mechanism. The method is to form the tail as the yarn is traveling from a supply source around a spool of the spring-loaded string-up aid to an aspirator which has an internal tail cutter. After the winder has started, and the rotating bobbin flange, which has a pin attached underneath and near the outer edge, reaches the desired speed, the spring-loaded string-up aid is manually released. The string-up aid springs upward to bring the yarn being aspirated to a position where the rotating bobbin pin engages the yarn. At this point, the yarn in the aspirator is reversed in direction and tension is applied to the yarn across the internal cutter which cuts the yarn. The string-up aid and tail cutter are located so that when the yarn has been cut and the direction is reversed, the yarn is directed into a tail storage slot underneath the bobbin flange. When the bobbin is removed, the slot no longer exists and the tail may be easily used. This apparatus and method allow formation of the tail of the inside end of the yarn which is preserved undamaged and extends from the inside of the full package to allow a junction between the tail and the head of another package to be processed.

Transfer tail apparatus and method for vertical spindle winder

The prior art apparatus to wind vertically running yarn was a vertical spindle with a pulley mounted on a driven shaft, a stationary yarn wheel guide, an upper vertically movable yarn guide wheel, a lower vertically movable yarn guide wheel, a double track cam vertically mounted with a driven pulley and shaft, an upper cam follower and shoe, a lower cam follower and shoe, cam housing having a vertical slot, a motor having both a spindle drive pulley and a cam drive pulley mounted on a drive shaft, a belt to drive the spindle from the motor and a belt to drive the cam from the motor. The motor would drive the vertical spindle and the cam by the connection of the driven pulleys to the motor drive pulleys with belts. The vertically movable yarn guide wheels were connected to their respective cam followers and the cam followers were both driven by this one double track cam to oscillate vertically in the cam housing slot. In this manner, the upper vertically movable yarn guide wheel oscillates in the upper half of the housing slot and the lower vertically movable guide wheel oscillates nearly the full length of the housing slot and for the full traverse of the winding yarn. The movable guide wheels, in concert, maintain a constant length of yarn between the stationary yarn wheel and the spindle. The stationary yarn wheel is centered with respect to the length of yarn traverse wound onto the vertical spindle. The improvement comprises a two-speed transmission used to drive the cam at two winds, and a high speed double track cam with the tracks cut so that the cam followers will describe a path at reversal along a 60.degree. angular displacement of a curve of cycloidal development. Thus, the spindle and the cam can start at a wind of from about 89 to about 152.52 and after about 0.1 to about 3 minutes, then change to achieve a wind of from about 11 to about 17. Yarn wound up in this manner can be unwound of speeds of up to 3,000 feet per minute or higher, for processing at speeds up to 8,000 feet per minute.
