A method for optimizing and transforming a compiler program in a computer system. The method comprises the steps of constructing a compiler comprising a program augmentation capability; and, locating this capability in association with phases of a standard compilation process. The program augmentation capability may comprise symbolic automatic differentiation, or generation of Taylor series, or generation of Hessian or Jacobian matrices.

Computer-program compilers comprising a program augmentation capability

A graphical depiction of a carousel containing the icons or windows is provided for convenient presentation and manipulation on a screen of multiple windows, icons or TV broadcasts. These icons or windows are rotated into or out of view as the carousel rotates. Rotation can be controlled by mouse driven cursor, keyboard, application software, etc. Various identifying characteristics can be used to help users search through windows; for example, the title text of each window may be visible when the windows are in the carousel. Color can be an additional identifying characteristic. In instances where a large number of icons are used, this is a means for consolidating them. Multiple carousels can be used to consolidate different kinds of windows, icons, or TV broadcasts.

Video display and selection on a graphical interface

A method and system for facilitating the selection of icons. Those icons which are next likely to be used are selected and automatically moved towards a cursor thereby facilitating selection of the icons. Additionally, those icons likely to be used or other icons selected by a user may track the cursor such that those icons are always close to the cursor and capable of being easily selected. Further, in order to facilitate selection of icons, icons are provided with the capability of announcing themselves when a cursor comes close to the icon. In addition, it is possible to reduce the amount of clutter on a computer display so that icons may be easily selected. In order to clean up a computer display, icons which are least likely to be used are faded, eliminated or shrunk to a smaller size. In another embodiment, icons that are not used very often may disappear into a master icon and further, icons which have a conceptual relationship between them may be linked by a visual graphical representation.

Method and system for automatically consolidating icons into a master

Windows, icons, or TV channel selections can be conveniently moved between multiple monitors controlled by a single device such as a computer. The monitors may be cathode ray tubes (CRTs) for liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Inter-monitor movement is achieved using a 'transport' region into which icons, windows, or TV channel selections are moved on a particular monitor. Once in this region, the icons, windows, or TV channel selections transport from the current monitor to a second monitor. In instances where a large number of icons are used, this is a means for consolidating, managing, and displaying them in an organized way.

Video display and control of multiple graphical interfaces

A construction process employs an insulating abutment which serves as a guide in the formation of a shortlength electrode in the fabrication of a semiconductor device. The process is particularly useful in construction of extremely short channel asymmetric lightly doped drain (LDD) silicon FET's in which case a bird beak is formed on the surface of a silicon wafer. The bird beak is composed of silicon dioxide produced by oxidation of the silicon substrate with the aid of an oxidation resistant covering of silicon nitride, the edge of which defines the location of the abutment. Reactive ion etching is employed to remove excess silicon dioxide leaving a vertical wall at one side of the abutment. Thereafter, the silicon nitride layer is stripped off leaving a slating roof to the abutment. A dope polysilicon layer is deposited conformally on the surface of the substrate and on the abutment to a depth equal to the desired length of the electrode. Further reactive ion etching removes all of the polysilicon except for the portion thereof appended to the vertical wall of the abutment. Thereafter, ion implantation establishes a drain region at the side of the abutment having the slanting roof and a source region at the side of the abutment facing the vertical wall. The profile of the ion implantation follows the profile of the abutment enabling the stopping properties of the abutment to constrict the amount of charge implanted in the drain side of the channel.

Construction of short-length electrode in semiconductor device

The combined use of an angularly deposited mask with a subsequent angular conductivity conversion operation extending partially under the mask permits both shorter dimensions and the ability to accommodate the straggle location change when subsequent processing steps occur. The mask is deposited at a low angle with respect to a planar surface, a subsequent conductivity conversion, such as ion implantation, extends under the mask, the mask is removed and a smaller gate is positioned in its location, the gate being smaller than the distance from the source to the point where the conversion extended under the mask, providing thereby an ultra-short gate FET.
