A downhole tool system may include a Stoneley wave emitter, located in a downhole tool, designed to emit Stoneley waves into a borehole. The downhole tool system may include one or more Stoneley wave sensors, located in the downhole tool, and a processor. The processor may be designed to receive signals from the one or more Stoneley wave sensors based on the detection of the Stoneley waves. The processor may use the signals to obtain a temporal measurement of the Stoneley waves. Based at least in part on the temporal measurement, the processor may calculate a distance from the downhole tool or a bottom-hole assembly to the bottom of the borehole.

Systems and methods for using Stoneley waves for bottom-hole proximity detection

A casing deployment apparatus includes a processing resource with a signal pattern recognition engine unit (), a tubular measurement unit () and a decision unit (). A first sensor input () and a second sensor input () are attached to the pattern recognition unit () and receive first sensor data and second sensor data corresponding to first and second time-varying sensor signals. A method for determining a status of a drill string in a wellbore. The method can include obtaining pressure data and hook load data for the drill string. The pressure data can be filtered to obtain pressure sections. A low pressure threshold can be determined based upon the pressure sections. The hook load data can be filtered to obtain hook load sections. Hook load baselines can be determined based upon the hook load sections. Dynamic thresholds can be determined based upon the hook load baselines. An in-slips status of the drill string can be determined based upon the low pressure threshold, the dynamic thresholds, or both.

A portable device including a biometric voice sensor configured to detect voice information and to take an action in response to speech spoken into the voice sensor. The device also includes a voice processor configured to process the voice sensor signal characteristics. The portable device may encrypt the detected signal and may compare the detected signal characteristics with voice characteristics that are stored in a memory of the portable device for applications such as voice enabled authentication, identification, command execution, encryption, and free speech recognition. The voice sensor may include a thin membrane portion that detects pressure waves caused by human speech. The portable device may be a contact-type smart card, a contactless smart card, or a hybrid smart card with contact and contactless interfaces. The device may be powered by an internal battery or by a host via contacts or by a power signal making use of the antenna in a contactless implementation.

A system and a method for operating a device that is not capable of independently maintaining a local time clock to enforce a time-based transaction policy that requires a reliable time reference. The device establishes a secure communications channel to one or more network-attached time sources and inquires of each of the network-attached time-sources as to the current time using the secure communications channel. The device receives the current time from the network-attached time-sources and uses the received current times to estimate a current calendar time and to compute a reliability index associated with the estimated current calendar time. The device uses the estimated current calendar time and reliability index to enforce the time-based transaction policy.

A metrology device incorporates a programmable smart card. The smart card may be a Java programmable smart card and allows the metrology device to access Java applications and resources while still retaining independent control over its metrological functions. The smart card may be external to the metrology device, or it may be fixedly installed in the metrology device. Java applications may be pre-loaded or downloaded on the smart card. The metrological device may select which applications to be run on the smart card. Alternatively, the metrological functions may be included as part of a Java class library which may be accessed by the operating system or Java applications.
