Adjustable continuous casting mold for manufacturing continuously cast ingots of different dimensions, having a mold frame with a pair of stationary facing side walls and a pair of facing end walls, where at least one end wall can be displaced and each side wall and end wall features a primary coolant chamber and, connected to the primary coolant chamber, a plurality of primary coolant channels for jetting coolant onto the ingot material. The displaceable end walls exhibit a secondary coolant chamber and, connected to the secondary coolant chamber, a plurality of secondary coolant channels for jetting additional coolant onto the continuously cast material, the secondary coolant channels being arranged such that the coolant emerging from them strikes the continuously cast material after, with respect to the direction of flow of the cast material, the coolant from the primary coolant channels.

Adjustable continuous casting mold

Mold for continuously casting rolling slabs or extrusion billets where the mold is in the form of a hollow cylindrical body with a cylindrical mold interior, and an inlet and an outlet opening, and the mold comprises at least two closed, ring-shaped mold elements with a common concentric central axis, the mold axis, where a mold element, the inner sleeve, lies on the inside with respect to the mold axis and defines the sides of the cylindrical mold interior, and the other mold element, the supporting member, lies outside with respect to the central axis of the mold and accommodates the inner sleeve. The mold elements are releasably joined by inserting the inner sleeve in the supporting member, and side of the inner sleeve facing the supporting member and/or the side of the supporting member facing the inner sleeve are/is made such that, after joining the two elements of the mold together, a concentric, ring-shaped space, the second coolant chamber for accommodating coolant is formed between the inner sleeve and the supporting member.

Method and modular continuous casting mold for manufacturing ingots

The casting machine features a mold (10), a deflection plate (66) with a lower surface (80) for guiding cooling water (20) which is sprayed at high pressure and/or a supporting plate with an upper surface for guiding cooling water (20) flowing at low pressure. Both surfaces for guiding the cooling water (20) are made of insulating material. The electromagnetic shield (18, 76) is cooled on the inside at least in the active region. The mold housing (32) is preferably made out of a perforated sheet (34) which has been bent several ways. The active region of the shield is preferably in the form of a U-shaped or V-shaped shielding sheet and features an insert or coating for reducing the magnetic field of the inductor (12) increasingly in the upwards direction. The water-jetted surface (80) for guiding the cooling water is moved continuously backwards and forwards and/or tilted in a given rhythmic manner. As a result the curtain of water (22), which is independent of the electromagnetic shield (18), is moved up and down over the ingot (14) over a height (h).

Casting machine for vertical continuous casting in a magnetic field

During electromagnetic continuous casting of rolled bars from aluminum/magnesium alloys defects in the form of vertical ripples and oxide deposits arise on the bar surface as a consequence of the greatly increased rate of oxidation at the melt surface due to the presence of magnesium in the melt, which defects make it necessary to mill over the rolled surfaces of the bar in the case of stringent requirements with respect to the surface quality of rolled products. The said surface defects can be prevented using an oxide barrier which dips into the melt head, extends at least over the longitudinal sides of the inductor and is arranged approximately parallel to and at a distance from said longitudinal sides, which oxide barrier is moved backwards and forwards horizonally in its longitudinal direction.
