The present invention relates to a method for producing a first subunit of an HNB smoking article that comprises a rod-shaped body and a cavity arranged thereon, wherein a tubular body is arranged on and attached to one of the end faces of the rod-shaped body, such as via a cover strip attaching the tubular body to the rod-shaped body.

Apparatus for the application of adhesive to one side of a running web of tipping paper for use in filter cigarette makers has a single source of adhesive or two or more sources containing identical or different adhesives, and one or more conduits leading from the source(s) to one or more nozzles which applies or apply one or more films of a single adhesive or of different adhesives to selected portions of the one side of the web. The rate of admission of adhesive(s) to the nozzle(s), including interruption and restarting of admission of adhesive(s), is regulated by one or more valves each having a body receiving a rotary valving element provided with one or more peripheral projections and/or recesses serving to regulate the rate of flow of adhesive toward the single nozzle or the respective nozzles. The rotary elements of two or more valves can constitute disc-shaped sections of a single rotor confined in a valve body common to all valves. The adhesive or at least one of two or more different adhesives being applied to the web can contain one or more taste- and/or odor- and or flammability influencing agents.

Method of and apparatus for applying adhesive to webs of wrapping material

Adhesive-coated bands of paper, tipping paper or plastic foil are convoluted around discrete one-piece or composite rod-shaped articles, such as coaxial plain cigarettes and filter mouthpieces, during travel through a rolling zone bounded by a pair of surfaces at least one of which moves relative to the other. The inlet of the rolling zone receives articles, each of which carries a non-convoluted band, from a conveyor which forms part of a pressing device operative immediately ahead of the inlet of the rolling zone and serving to press successively delivered bands against the respective articles and to effect an at least slight flattening of the articles immediately prior to entry into the rolling zone. The width of the path for the articles increases at the outlet of the rolling zone or immediately downstream of such outlet.

Method of and apparatus for convoluting bands around rod-shaped articles

An improved method of and an improved apparatus for detecting and correcting unsatisfactory patterns of adhesive is applied to a running web of paper or the like in a tobacco processing machine by a cyclically operated paster. A linear scanning camera is employed to take pictures of groups of at least some of the patterns which are applied during successive cycles of the paster, and such pictures are displayed and compared with a reference image of satisfactory patterns and preferably also with additional reference images. The results of comparison are relied upon for the making of corrections, for example, by changing the operation of the paster and/or by changing the direction of advancement of the web between the paster and the camera.

Method of and apparatus for applying, monitoring and correcting patterns of adhesive on running webs of paper and the like

A filter-attachment machine in the tobacco-processing industry is provided. The machine has a plurality of conveying devices for products in the tobacco-processing industry, and at least one main drive that drives the plurality of conveying devices. The machine also has a pull-off device for pulling a cover tape ribbon from a cover tape supply, a cover-tape cutting device for cutting the cover tape ribbon into sections of a predetermined length, and at least one secondary drive that drives the pull-off device and the cover-tape cutting device. The cover tape ribbon is conveyed from the pull-off device to the cover-tape cutting device, and the sections of cover tape ribbon are transferred to the products on one of the plurality of conveying devices.

Filter-attachment machine and method of operating a filter-attachment machine

Apparatus for the application of adhesive to one side of a running web of tipping paper for use in filter cigarete makers has a single source of adhesive or two or more sources containing identical or different adhesives, and one or more conduits leading from the source(s) to one or more nozzles which applies or apply one or more films of a single adhesive or of different adhesives to selected portions of the one side of the web. The rate of admission of adhesive(s) to the nozzle(s), including interruption and restarting of admission of adhesive(s), is regulated by one or more valves each having a body receiving a rotary valving element provided with one or more peripheral projections and/or recesses serving to regulate the rate of flow of adhesive toward the single nozzle or the respective nozzles. The rotary elements of two or more valves can constitute disc-shaped sections of a single rotor confined in a valve body common to all valves. The adhesive or at least one of two or more different adhesives being applied to the web can contain one or more taste- and/or odor- and or flammability influencing agents.

A web of air-permeable uniting band material for use in a filter tipping machine is advanced lengthwise by a first pair of driven rollers and a second pair of driven rollers, first through a magazine which is located between the two pairs of rollers, thereupon around a roller-shaped flanged adjustable braking device which is located upstream of the second pair of rollers, and around an adjustable curling device between the braking device and the second pair of rollers. The braking action is regulated for the purpose of subjecting the running web to a predictable curling action. This enhances the quality of filter cigarettes wherein the tobacco-containing and the filter material-containing parts are connected to each other by adhesive-coated uniting bands constituting sections of the thus treated web.

Apparatus for transporting unwound webs of wrapping material for smokers&prime; products

The application of adhesive to selected non-perforated sections of one side of a running web of tipping paper in a filter cigarette making machine is carried out in such a way that the adhesive is invariably applied only to the non-perforated sections which alternate with perforated sections. To this end, the speed of advancement of the web along its path past an adhesive applicator and thereupon through a severing unit (which subdivides the web into a file of successive uniting bands to be wrapped around filter mouthpieces and plain cigarettes) is temporarily altered when a comparison of first signals denoting detection of successive perforated sections of the running web with second signals denoting the frequency of severing of the web in the severing unit indicates the need for a temporary change of the speed of the web upstream of the adhesive applicator. The latter is installed at a fixed distance from the severing unit.

Apparatus for applying adhesive to a running web of wrapping material for smokers products

A paster which serves to apply a film of adhesive material to the underside of a running web of flexible material, such as tipping paper in a filter cigarette maker, has a roller which supplies successive increments of the film to the underside of the running web and cooperates with a biasing device which rides on the web and urges certain portions of the underside of the web against the roller. The length of the area of contact between the biasing device and the upper side of the running web is less than the width of the web. This renders it possible to prevent or to minimize undesirable flow of adhesive laterally beyond the marginal zones of the web as well as into perforations which are customarily provided in webs of tipping paper.

Apparatus for coating running webs with flowable material

Apparatus for testing the end portions of cigarettes to detect end portions containing insufficient quantities of tobacco has a conveyor which transports the cigarettes sideways past at least two testing stations each of which accommodates a discrete capacitive and/or photoelectronic testing unit. Repeated monitoring of the end portions of successive cigarettes reduces the likelihood that unsatisfactory cigarettes, particularly cigarettes with end portions which are empty or contain insufficient quantities of tobacco particles, would reach the consumers. Signals which are generated by the testing units can be used to segregate cigarettes having defective end portions.

Apparatus for testing end portions of rod-shaped articles of the tobacco

The diameters of successive rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry are ascertained while the articles advance in the flutes of a conveyor, first along a rolling unit which turns successive articles at random through different angles and thereupon past a photoelectronic detector wherein a radiation source emits a narrow beam of radiation which impinges upon successive articles for intervals of time which are dependent upon the diameters of the articles. The transducer of the detector generates signals which are indicative of the monitored diameters, and such signals are transmitted to an evaluating circuit which controls an ejector for unsatisfactory articles and/or displays the monitored diameters on a screen. The articles are partially lifted off the conveyor by cushions of compressed air during transport past the rolling unit.

Method of and apparatus for rolling rod-shaped articles

Apparatus for optically scanning a moving cigarette rod for the presence of defects in its external surface has two annularly arranged groups of diodes which emit green light in the wavelength range of between 0.49 and 0.58.mu. and direct such light from the opposite sides of a plane that is normal to the moving rod so that the incident light is reflected by successive annular portions of the external surface of the rod into the aforementioned plane. The reflected light is focused by systems of lenses upon discrete photosensitive transducers through discrete slit diaphragms on the transducers themselves or on a thin metallic ring which is adjustably mounted on the support for the diodes and the systems of lenses.

Apparatus for testing rod-shaped products of the tobacco processing

The exterior of successive filter cigarettes, filter rod sections or other rod-shaped articles of the tobacco processing industry is monitored for the presence of various defects including absence or improper orientation of filter mouthpieces, improperly applied or outwardly projecting uniting bands, absence of roundness and/or others by directing a beam of radiation along successive articles while they move sideways in the flutes of a drum-shaped conveyor. The beams of radiation are influenced by defects and are thereupon monitored for the purposes of generating signals which are indicative of defects, if any. The beam of radiation extends all the way along the full length of each article and can also extend partially or around the entire circumference of each article.
