Methods and compositions useful for capturing proteins or peptides from a sample mixture and analyzing the captured proteins or peptides via high throughput electrospray ionization (ESI) or matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (HT MALDI MS) are provided. The methods and compositions are useful in large scale, simultaneous analyses of proteins and peptides present in a cell(s), tissue(s), or biological fluid(s).

Peptide or protein-capturing surfaces for high throughput MALDI mass spectrometry

A cell transfection apparatus and methods for making and using the cell transfection apparatus are described. The cell transfection apparatus has a surface on which there is printed at different locations one or more foreign biomolecules (e.g., DNA, RNA, oligonucleotides, nucleotides). The foreign biomolecules can be printed at the same time. The surface is then covered with a transfection reagent which is incubated and removed from the surface before cells in a cell growth media are placed on the surface. The surface is configured such that the cells which become transfected with one or more foreign biomolecules are segregated from the cells which fail to become transfected with one or more foreign biomolecules. There are disclosed two embodiments of the cell transfection apparatus.

Cell transfection apparatus and methods for making and using the cell transfection apparatus

Methods of synthesizing starch acetate containing at least 20% high molecular weight carbohydrates using a MSA catalyst alone, or in combination with a co-catalyst promoting cross-linking, such a phosphoric acid, are described. The MSA is desirably added slowly following beginning of the exothermic reaction of starch, acetic acid and acetic anhydride.

In one embodiment this invention provides a novel type of copolymer which can be formed into a thin film nonlinear optical medium which exhibits superior light transmission properties, and which has excellent adhesion properties when laminated with inorganic or organic layers. This invention provides multistep process embodiments for the production of novel esters which exhibit nonlinear optical response. A process embodiment is illustrated by the reaction of a Schiff base with a substituted acetic acid to form a stilbene alcohol intermediate: ##STR1## The stilbene alcohol intermediate is decarboxylated, and then is esterified in the presence of a pyridine type catalyst to provide an ester with a conjugated structure.
