To provide a hydraulic master cylinder with inlet ports and outlet ports arranged in an angle to each other wherein the outlet ports can be on either side of the housing without the need of two different casts, the master cylinder according to the invention is equipped with either two sets of protrusions adapted to be machined into inlet ports or two sets of protrusions adapted to be machined into outlet ports. The two sets of identical protrusions are arranged symmetrically with respect to the one set of different protrusions. Thus, depending on the desired side of the outlet ports, only one set of the two sets of identical protrusions is machined while the other set remains an unmachined accumulation of material.

Master cylinder

A composite brake adapter for a caliper disc brake assembly is made up of a first pre-stamped part of a sheet of metal adapted to match an axle housing of the assembly, and of a second part cast onto an upper surface of the first part to adhere thereto, additional structural elements providing matching of the second part with a caliper of the assembly being made an integral part of the second part. A method of making a composite brake adapter for a caliper disc brake assembly comprises the steps of providing a first part of the adapter, the first part being provided with mounting holes to match an axle housing of the assembly and being made of a sheet of metal; placing the first part into a mold, and casting a second part of the adapter into the mold onto a surface of the first part. To incorporate additional structural elements of the adapter with a caliper of the assembly, the additional structural elements are placed into a precision fixture and secured within the mold prior to casting the second part.

Composite brake adapter

A vehicular brake assembly comprises brake shoes and a brake disc. The brake shoes are fastened to a sheet plate and mounted inside an inner drum portion of the brake disc. The brake disc is operatively connected to an axle placed within a stationary axle housing that carries a mounting flange. The sheet plate is fastened to the mounting flange. An anchor pin is attached to the mounting flange and an opening is made in the sheet plate for the anchor pin to project therethrough to thereby serve as an abutment surface for the brake shoes transferring any force exerted on the brake shoes directly to the mounting flange. The brake disc is operatively engaged with a caliper adapted to grip an outward portion of the brake disc. The caliper slides are provided on the mounting flange to receive the caliper. A method of making a flange for the braking structure comprises the steps of having a flange intended to match an axle housing and preferably made as a pre-stamped metal sheet part, the flange being provided with mounting holes; placing the prefabricated flange into a form (mold); and casting an anchor pin and caliper slides onto respective surfaces of the flange.

Rear knuckle with brake features

A modular pin mounted caliper assembly is provided for use in a disc brake. The modular caliper assembly can be angled with one or more other modular caliper assemblies. Each caliper segment has a housing with a piston disposed in an inboard portion thereof for movement in an axial direction. A pair of flanges extend from opposite sides of the housing and are axially offset from each other enabling the connection and alignment of a plurality of segments. The resulting caliper can be used in a wide variety of vehicles despite changes in brake torque requirements. The modular caliper assembly includes a plurality of inboard and outboard brake shoe pairs. Each brake shoe has a pair of pin engaging features extending from opposite outboard ends of the brake shoe. Like the caliper segment flanges, the pin engaging features are axially offset from one another, enabling the shoes to be overlapped on common pins.

A fault controller for a brake system includes a control display having a plurality of identifying labels displayed thereon corresponding to predetermined brake system fault mode options. A plurality of switches corresponding to the identifying labels and selectively setable to activate and deactivate conditions are on the control display. Fluid control valves are disposed along brake lines between the master cylinder and the wheel brakes. There are electrical connections between the switches and fluid control valves wherein setting one of the switches to the activate condition activates a corresponding fault mode of the brake system. An enable switch on the controller, if included, must be set to an 'enable' condition for the fault controller to affect brake operation.

Brake system fault mode generator

A fault controller for a brake system has a control display with a plurality of identifying labels displayed thereon which correspond to predetermined brake system fault options. A plurality of switches corresponding to the identifying labels and selectively setable to activate and deactivate conditions are on the control display. Fluid control valves are disposed along brake lines between the master cylinder and the wheel brakes. There are electrical connections between the switches and the fluid control valves wherein setting one of the switches to the activate condition activates a corresponding fault mode of the anti-lock brake system.

A vacuum booster assembly having first and second walls defining a vacuum chamber and a diaphragm disposed within said vacuum chamber. The diaphragm includes a beaded peripheral portion which is sealingly engaged between the walls and the beaded portion is adhesively secured to at least one of the walls to prevent movement during assembly.

Vacuum booster assembly

A disc brake for the wheel of a motor vehicle includes a rotor mounted to the wheel, and a caliper straddling the rotor and supporting a brake pad on either side thereof. In order to accommodate packaging constraints within the wheel's rim, the outboard pad and the rotor's outboard friction surface are both positioned radially inwardly of the inboard pad and inboard rotor friction surface. A hydraulic piston located in the inboard portion of the caliper first urges the inboard pad along the piston's longitudinal axis into initial engagement with the rotor's inboard friction surface, whereupon the piston acts through the caliper's bridge and finger area to urge the outboard pad into engagement with the rotor's outboard friction surface. The effective radius of each pad is less than the radial offset of the piston's longitudinal axis from the rotational axis of the wheel and rotor so as to reduce the bending moment applied to the rotor upon braking.

Caliper-type disc brake with stepped rotor

A slanted brake rotor for use in a disc brake assembly includes a flange portion for mounting a wheel wherein the wheel includes an axis of rotation associated therewith, a cylindrical, axially oriented barrel portion extending from said flange, and an annular member extending from the barrel portion. The annular member includes a central axis and two opposing friction faces for engaging a respective friction element during braking. The annular member is slanted or angled from the conventional upright position so that the central axis of the annular member forms an acute angle with the wheel axis of rotation. Each face of the annular member has a free first end, and a respective second end positioned radially inwardly of the first free end, taken with respect to the wheel axis of rotation. Each face is substantially planar between the free first end and the second end. Further, each friction face is substantially parallel to the central axis.
