A disk storage has one or more disks provided with center holes. An electric motor extends coaxially through these holes and has an external rotor to the outer circumference of which the disks are secured so that they rotate with the rotor. A labyrinth seal is provided for at least reducing the escape of contaminants from the motor.

Disk storage drive

A disk storage drive for mounting and driving at least one hard magnetic storage disk in a contaminant-free chamber is provided. A motor of the drive includes a stator, a bearing system, a rotor casing mounted to rotate around the periphery of the stator and a mounting arrangement for mounting the motor and disk in the contaminant-free chamber in a manner which minimizes the transfer of contaminants from the stator and bearing system into the contaminant-free chamber.

Labyrinth seal in disk storage drive

Disk storage drive for receiving at least one storage disk provided with a central opening. The disk drive is provided with an outer rotor type driving motor having a rotor casing mounted by means of a shaft in a bearing system so as to rotate relative to a stator and receive the storage disk. The stator includes magnetically active parts. At least that part of the rotor casing receiving the storage disk is made from a non-ferromagnetic material and carries the shaft either directly or by means of a hub. A shield made from a ferromagnetic material is provided as an inner part of the rotor casing. The shield envelopes the circumference and one end of the magnetically active parts of the driving motor. The outer diameter of the rotor casing is smaller than the central opening of the storage disk.

A magnetic disc storage driving mechanism is provided comprising a DC brushless driving motor having a stator and a rotor, a contaminant-free space without air intake provision for containing storage disks, bearings mounting the rotor for rotation and for driving a hub which receives at least one rigid storage disk within the contaminant-free space, and labyrinth seals arranged between the drive parts of the motor and the contaminant-free space containing the storage disk.

To prevent damage to magnetic storage disks from sliding of the magnetic heads over the disk surface during running-out of the disk to a stop, the disk is positively braked when its drive is de-energized, so as to shorten the running-out time.
