A multi-line exhaust system has at least two exhaust lines which are substantially separate from one another and at least one measurement sensor for measuring at least one characteristic variable of the exhaust gas. In which system, the at least one measurement sensor can be brought into contact with at least two exhaust lines. In such an exhaust system the measurement sensor determines at least one characteristic variable of the exhaust gas in two or more different exhaust lines, so that the outlay required to monitor the at least one characteristic variable in a plurality of exhaust lines can be significantly reduced compared to if a measurement sensor is formed in each exhaust line.

In a method for the control of the supplied air/fuel ratio of an internal combustion engine () with a catalytic converter () which is located in the exhaust gas line () with an integrated oxygen reservoir (), it is suggested that the air/fuel ratio be controlled as a function of at least one parameter of the internal combustion engine (), at least one parameter of the catalytic converter (), and/or as a function of the type and amount of the exhaust gas emissions currently occurring, in order to optimize the speed for adjustment of the admission or discharge of oxygen in the oxygen reservoir () contained in the catalytic converter () for favorable conversion of the exhaust gas emissions during transient operation of the internal combustion engine () and after deviations from the air/fuel ratio &#x3bb;=1. As claimed in the invention, a 'disturbance' of the exhaust gas composition which occurs during transient operation of the internal combustion engine () is corrected with a speed which takes into account both the current conversion demand by the catalytic converter () and also the current conversion performance of the catalytic converter () and thus makes possible improved overall exhaust gas conversion.

Method for the control of the supplied air/fuel ratio of an internal combustion engine

A method and a device for controlling the temperature of an NOaccumulator to purify the exhaust gas stream of an internal combustion engine, can be used especially for diesel or lean-burn engines. A heat flow is carried off from the exhaust gas stream upstream of the NOaccumulator in the exhaust gas line depending on the operating state of the internal combustion engine, so that a maximum temperature of the NOaccumulator is not exceeded and more particularly so that a specified temperature range is maintained. In order to obtain a minimum operating temperature of the NOaccumulator, the internal combustion engine is operated at least at an air-fuel ratio of &#x3bb;&#x2266;1 until the minimum operating temperature is reached.

In a process for operation of an internal combustion engine having a NOx storage catalytic converter, after desulfuration is required the mode of operation of the internal combustion engine is changed to &lgr; <1 and secondary air is injected upstream from the NOx storage catalytic converter ( ) during a first time interval T . After secondary air injection is interrupted, the internal combustion engine is operated at &lgr; <1 during a second time interval T . Normal operation of the internal combustion engine is subsequently resumed. This process makes simple desulfuration of the NOx storage catalytic converter ( ) possible (FIG. ).
