A method for controlling a network node and a network having several nodes and terminals. The network node has a plurality of interfaces. One incoming data stream is forwarded from the network node to one of a further network node and a terminal, the network node maintains and stores a connection data stock with connection-related information used to control existing connections to other network nodes, and the connection data stock indicates a data stream designator for an interface and a data stream that is incoming or outgoing at the interface and a data stream direction. Another method uses one terminal as a data source and one as a datasink, each network node forwarding one incoming data stream to one of another network node and a terminal and maintaining a connection data stock with information used to control existing connections to other network nodes, including a data stream designator and a network node interface. Management of existing connections to other network nodes is carried out irrespective of data sink or subscriber-related information. Each network node in a telecommunications network having several network nodes is controlled according to this method. A network node is also provided to implement the method. The invention can be used to easily distribute streams, especially in mass applications.

In response to a connection setup initiated by a time-division-multiplex-oriented component, an ATM-communications-network-specific destination information item is derived from a specified signaling information item, and an ATM switched connection is automatically set up in the ATM communications network. After a transparent transfer of signaling and useful information via the switched connection that has been set up, the ATM switched connection in question is released. This provides more efficient use of the ATM communications network.

Components are controlled in a communication system composed at least of a network for transmitting digital communication signals. The network has at least one switching equipment and communication terminal equipment allocated to subscribers multipoint-multiconnection call set up. The components respectively contain control units for controlling a call set up, whereby one component is respectively controlled with signalization information in the form of messages communicated over the network from a different component. Each message contains at least one protocol and message identification, attributes of the object of call, subscriber and connection with object identification numbers for each of the individual objects. Each message also contains information about the relationships between different objects. The information elements of objects are contained in a message independently of the relationship to the other objects. Over and above this, each message separately contains information about the relationships between different objects. The control unit of the controlled component identifies the relationships between the objects on the basis of these additional information.
