Some embodiments of the disclosed heat exchanger have flat tubes, corrugated ribs, collection tubes, connection pieces, and a connection plate used (for example) for the attachment of the heat exchanger in a casing through which charge air flows, whereby the individual components of the heat exchanger can be manufactured from aluminum and can be soldered together. In some embodiments, at least four collecting tubes define coolant collection chambers, whereby coolant follows at least one outgoing route lying between first and the second collection tubes, and at least one return route proceeding in an opposite direction lying between third and fourth collecting tubes. The outgoing route can be provided in at least one flat tube-corrugated rib series, while the return route can be provided in at least another flat tube-corrugated rib series, arranged downstream of the first flat tube-corrugated rib series.

Intercooler apparatus and method

A heat exchanger including a core with tubes and ribs between tube plates, two collecting tanks on the tube plates, and closure caps, all produced from solder-coated aluminum. The core includes a plurality of alternating flat tubes and ribs between spaced tube plates. Each collecting tank has two longitudinal walls joined to the longitudinal connection edges of one of the tube plates. The closure caps close ends of the collecting tanks, and have an edge aligned substantially parallel to the collecting tank walls. The edges of the longitudinal walls of the collecting tanks are arranged between the longitudinal connection edges of the tube plates, with protrusions on the edges of the longitudinal walls inserted in openings in the tube plates. The transverse connection edges of the tube plates have a contour cut-out matching the closure cap profile to form a tight and strong solder bond with the closure caps.

Heat exchanger, especially for motor vehicles

A heat exchanger having a manifold defined by a plurality of connected closure pieces. A corner of the manifold is defined by the connected joint of three closure pieces, where one closure piece has a bent edge abutting an end of a second closure piece adjacent a generally flat section of a third closure piece. The bent edge of the one closure piece adjacent the manifold corner is a bend in a thin portion of the one closure piece, where the thin portion has a sheet thickness which is less than the sheet thickness of the adjacent portions of the one closure piece. Multiple corners of the manifold can be formed in this manner by thinning the thin and bending the portion, then connecting the closure pieces using solder to form a seal in the open cross section at the corners.

Each of the tubes () has a cut () in each of its short sides () extending from the end () to adjacent the interior side () of the tube plate (). Each of the tubes further includes a bend () formed in each of the long sides () of the tube () adjacent the cut () so that the long edges () of the tube () are adjacent the long edges () of the tube () on either side of the tube ().

Heat exchanger construction and method

A quick connect coupling for connecting a fluid conduit to a header tank includes first and second engaged and sealed coupling parts. The first coupling part includes a radially inner hollow cylindrical wall with a radially outer surface and diametrically opposite, axially directed fingers spaced radially outward of the cylindrical wall and attached thereto. The second coupling part includes a generally circular radially inner wall sized to be axially received between the cylindrical wall and the fingers and has an interior surface facing the radially outer surface of the cylindrical wall. A radially inwardly opening groove is located in the interior surface and a circular seal is disposed therein to sealingly engage the radially outer surface of the cylindrical wall when the coupling is assembled. The second coupling part also includes a radially outer wall sized to fit about the sides of the fingers and a retaining clip carried by the radially outer wall and extends through slots to enter grooves in the outer surfaces of the fingers to effectuate assembly of the two coupling parts.

Quick connect coupling for a heat exchanger

A heat exchanger including a core having a plurality of flat tubes with fins between adjacent tubes, the tubes each having flat side walls connected by front and rear walls defining a flow path, all of the walls extending longitudinally between opposite tube ends with the tube side walls defining a first height. First tube end portions in the tube ends of a plurality of the plurality of flat tubes include flat side walls flared apart to define a second height greater than the first height. Second tube end portions in the tube ends of the plurality of the plurality of flat tubes include a longitudinally extending cut through the front and rear walls with the flat side walls flared apart to define a third height greater than the second height. The side walls of adjacent tubes are secured together at the tube ends, and headers connect to the tube front and rear walls at the first and second tube end portions whereby the headers communicate with the tube flow paths.

Heat exchanger with cut tubes

An economically formed tube of rectangular or oval-like cross section and with a corrugated internal fin includes spaced, relatively long side wall sections joined at their ends by relatively short end wall sections. An integral fin within the tube has crests and valleys defining a plurality of flow paths within the tube and is formed of a corrugated section of a strip employed to form one of the side walls and at least part of both of the end walls.

Heat exchanger tube, heat exchanger and method of making the same

A &ldquo;header-less&rdquo; radiator utilizes a radiator core including tubes having end walls which are bifurcated for a short distance from the ends of the tubes and having one or both of the sidewalls in the bifurcated segment of the tube formed outward and adapted to contact and be joined in a fluid tight manner with the sidewall of an adjacent tube in the radiator core. A collecting tank has walls extending partially over the core to a distance beyond the bifurcation of the sidewalls, and joined to the end walls of the tubes in a fluid tight manner, such that the walls of the collecting tank in conjunction with the bifurcated end walls and outwardly formed side walls of the tubes define a common fluid plenum providing fluid communication between the tubes and the collecting tank.
