The hip joint socket is provided with a peripheral edge or flange in which a plurality of bores are formed. Each bore narrows conically from one side of the peripheral edge towards the free surface of the socket to provide outflow paths for excess bone cement which is displaced during implanting of the socket in a pelvis. The construction in the bores also permits the excess cement to harden into a rivet-like plug to increase the securement of the hip joint socket in the cement bed.

The medullary canal plug is formed by a deformable and expandable outer body having a jacket formed of a number of segments and a conical expansion body which is pulled into the outer body in order to expand the outer body. Spreading of the outer body causes barb-like anchoring elements to hook into the inner wall of a bone. The two bodies are permanently secured together via serrations on the inside of the outer body and the outside of the expansion body.

Expandable medullary canal plug

The cap-shaped endoprosthesis is formed of a cap-shaped shell and an anchoring pin which extends through a bore in the shell. In addition, the peripheral edge of the shell is provided with a plurality of apertures into which tissue may invade to aid in securing the shell to the femoral head. Where the shell and pin are made of different materials, a plastic member maintains the pin and shell out of contact with each other.

Cap-shaped endoprosthesis for a femoral head

A device for tensioning a surgical appliance is disclosed. The device comprises two elongate lever elements, anchor means articulated to a first end portion of one of the lever elements and adapted to be attached by a cortical screw to a bone fragment on one side of a fracture, and a hook element provided on a first end portion of the respective other lever element and adapted to be engaged with a plate member attached to a bone fragment on the respective other side of the fracture. The other end portions of the two lever elements are articulatedly intercoupled by means to exert a force between the two lever elements and to indicate the magnitude of that force. A threaded member is rotatably retained in each of two guide elements to interconnect intermediate portions of the two lever elements. The guide elements are pivotably supported on respective ones of the two lever elements and the threaded member is rotatably adjustable to enable a surgeon to vary the spacing between the respective first end portions of the two lever elements. Preferably, the hook element is pivotable between two alternative positions, in a first of which it is supported to exert traction on the plate member and in the second of which it is supported to exert distraction on the plate member.
