A circuit arrangement for controlling power converters with a microcontroller comprises a digitally controlled pulse width modulation unit having an output, at which a switching signal for switching a power converter switch is present, wherein the circuit arrangement has an analog circuit part for switching on a power converter switch if the voltage across the power converter switch is substantially zero. A method for controlling a power converter with a microcontroller that comprises a digitally operating pulse width modulation unit for regulating the power converter, said unit having an output, at which a switching signal for switching a power converter switch is present, wherein the power converter switch is switched on in the operating state of the quasi resonant mode of the power converter by means of a fast analog circuit.

Circuit arrangement and method for controlling power converters

A vehicle lighting system receives power from a power supply and includes a lighting control module, a lamp, and a ballast having a bias control circuit. The lighting control module provides a remote enable signal to the ballast in response to an input. The bias control circuit of the ballast receives a supply voltage from a power supply and the remote enable signal and selectively energizes a bias regulator circuit of the ballast as a function of the remote enable signal. When the bias regulator circuit is energized, a controller of the ballast operates the ballast to provide power from the power supply to the lamp.

A ballast () for powering at least one gas discharge lamp () comprises a switching converter () and an inverter (). Switching converter () includes a transistor () and a control circuit () that provides substantially zero voltage switching of the transistor () at a very high frequency. Preferably, control circuit () includes a drive circuit (), a turn-on synchronization circuit (), a current mirror circuit (), a rail voltage regulator circuit (600), and a lamp current regulator circuit (). Drive circuit () is preferably realized by a circuit arrangement that includes a standard pulse-width modulation integrated circuit ().

A circuit for operating a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp includes an H-bridge connected between a common terminal and a power line, and a control circuit connected to the H-bridge. The control circuit includes a transformer having a primary winding connected between the common terminal and a power terminal and a secondary winding connected between the common terminal and the power line, and a current sense resistor connected in series between the secondary winding and the common terminal. The HID lamp is connected to the common terminal and to the second winding so as sense a current across the current sense resistor.

A circuit for operating a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp includes an H-bridge connected between a common terminal and a power line, and a control circuit connected to the H-bridge. A boost circuit is connected in parallel with the H-bridge between the power line and the common terminal, where the boost circuit includes a resistor, a Zener diode and a capacitor connected in series.

An electrical circuit arrangement for producing pulsed-voltage sequences for the operation of discharges which are impeded dielectrically comprises a series circuit formed from a tuned circuit inductance (TR,-A) and a controlled switch (T,), a pulse generator (OS) which drives the switch (T,), an electrical valve (D,) which is connected in parallel with the switch (T,), a tuned circuit capacitance (C,) which is likewise connected in parallel with the switch (T,), a means (TR,-B, a&Prime;, b&Prime;) for coupling a lamp (La,) to at least one electrode which is impeded dielectrically, and, optionally, a buffer and feedback capacitor (C,) which is connected in parallel with the series circuit formed by the tuned circuit inductance (TR,-A) and the switch (T,). The means for coupling a lamp comprises in particular two connections (a&Prime;, b&Prime;) and the secondary winding (TR,-B) of an autotransformer (TR,), which is connected between a first pole of the switch (T,) and the corresponding connection (a&Prime;), the primary winding (TR,-A) of the autotransformer (TR,) acting as the tuned circuit inductance. The second connection (b&prime;) is connected to the second pole of the switch (T,). In operation, the switch (T,) opens and closes alternately in time with the drive signal of the pulse generator (OS), as a result of which a sequence of voltage pulses, which are separated by pauses, is produced at the electrodes, which are impeded dielectrically, of a lamp (La,) which is connected to the connections (a&Prime;, b&Prime;).
