The invention relates to a stereoscopic recording and display system, preferably having an autostereoscopic display system, wherein the position of the observer (especially the distance of the observer from the display system) is determined with a head tracking system and the convergence angle between the two cameras of the recording system is changed in dependence upon the distance of the observer from the display system in such a manner that, for an approach of the observer toward the system, the optical axes of both cameras are greatly convergent and, for a distancing of the observer from the display, the optical axes of both cameras are only slightly convergent. Simultaneously, the cameras are always focussed onto the intercept point of the optical axes of both cameras. By changing the convergence angle in dependence upon the distance of the observer from the display screen, either close image contents or distant image contents of the recorded scene are displayed stereoscopically depending upon the particular distance of the observer.

Stereoscopic recording and display system

Before the exposure of a film, the brightness of the miscroscope image is determined with a sensor by multiple constant (.tau.) which characterizes the dependence of the microscope image with time is determined. The film is subsequently exposed for a single exposure time (D.sub.c) which takes into account the dependence with time of the microscope image. The process is particularly suitable for microphotography of fluorescence pictures with fluorescence which bleaches out (fading). By the display of both the time constant (.tau.) and also the required exposure time, it can be estimated in advance, before exposure of the film, whether the dependence of the fluorescence on time permits microphotography with a sufficient exposure of the film, in the microscope conditions which have been set. A multiple exposure of the film is not required. A photodiode is provided for exposure measurement, and its photocurrent is integrated over time, the integration time being varied in dependence on the exposure measurement signal.

A photomicroscope includes a port for a still camera (11) and an additional video camera (14). The video image of the video camera (14) serves both for the operation of a passive autofocusing system (23, 24) and for the determination of the exposure time for the still camera (11). The image areas that are used for exposure metering can be selected via a control panel (27). The integration time of the video camera (14) can be varied up to the range of minutes. The selected image areas are superimposed on the object image.

A sensor for determining image brightness in the viewing-ray path of a microscope is so utilized as (1) to control the intensity of light for object illumination and (2) to black out or darken the viewing-ray path while switching optical elements such as from one to a selected other of a plurality of turret-mounted objective lenses. The arrangement assures that an observer will not be dazzled by sudden brightness in the course of lens switching or in the course of switching from use of one to use of another of a plurality of contrasting methods.
