A smart-card reader that includes a base, a first group of contact elements, a cover, a second group of contact elements and connecting means is disclosed. The smart-card reader can be readily soldered into a printed circuit board of a customer to be used in an apparatus in which the smart card reader is located.

A contact block for a smart card reader includes a plurality of contacts having first ends electrically connected to a printed circuit, and portions arranged to project beyond a surface of a contacts carrier and engage terminals of the smart card when the smart card is in an end position. A one piece switching contact also includes a portion that projects beyond the surface of the contacts carrier, the projecting portion extending into a path of the smart card to be engaged and moved by the smart card as the smart card is moved to the end position. A second portion of the one piece switching contact faces the printed circuit and is moved into engagement with a conductive path of the printed circuit as a result of engagement and movement of the first portions ofthe switching contact in response to movement of the smart card into the end position.

A chip card reading device for chip cards and/or SIM cards having different thicknesses is provided, comprising a frame, a receptacle within said frame, contact elements, first spring means for providing a contacting force of said contacting elements against contact pads on a chip card when said chip card is inserted, and second spring means for pressing said chip card against a bearing surface of said chip card reading device wherein said second spring means provide a spring force in excess of the contacting force provided by said first spring means.

A reader for contactless data cards includes a printed circuit, contacts for establishing contact with a contact-type data card, and at least one drive coil for transmitting in contactless manner energy and data between the printed circuit and a data medium on the data card. The at least one drive coil forms a component of the printed circuit, and the printed circuit in turn includes a flexible portion which establishes an electrical connection to outside the reader for both the contacts and the drive coil, thereby reducing the height of the reader. A variety of carriage configurations may be provided to bring the drive coils and/of contacts into proximity with the card, or for bringing the card into proximity with the drive coils and/or contacts in order to avoid wear on the contacts and ensure a good electromagnetic coupling between the drive coils and the card when the card is of the contactless type.

The present invention relates to a contacting apparatus for a SI module. The SI module is provided with contact areas adapted to be contacted by contact elements supported by said contacting apparatus. So as to achieve a contacting apparatus having small outer dimensions, the contact elements of the contact apparatus for the two rows of contact areas are arranged in an intermeshing manner.

A magnetic head support for a card reader includes a cardanically mounted support arm. Cardanic movement is permitted by a spherical bearing on the arm, which is biased against a screw fixed to a stationary component to form a universal pivot. The arm is guided by guide members on the stationary component and includes, at one end, an adjustment frame in which the head is adjustably positioned relative to a specific track.

A chipcard reading apparatus includes a stationary frame and a contact element support mounted within an opening in the frame for reciprocal movement between a reading position and an initial position. At least one guide path for guiding the reciprocal movement of the contact element support is provided in the frame, and at least one such guide path is provided in the contact element support. Movement of the contact element support into the reading position is initiated by pushing of the chipcard into the reader, and return of the support to the initial position is accomplished by pulling of the chipcard from the reader. The chipcard is held in the reader by a brake which contacts the chipcard when the support is in the reading position, at which time the contact elements are securely in contact with corresponding contacts on the chipcard.
