A device and a method of detecting and preprocessing vehicle data, traffic data, and/or driver data, such as the speed, direction of travel, engine condition, weather conditions, heart rate, etc., is described, in which the time and location of recording the data are also recorded in addition to the data mentioned. The position determination may be accomplished in particular by a positioning system such as GPS. The position may be adjusted using a digital map. The recorded data is preferably preprocessed in real time, coded, and/or compressed and/or subjected to a statistical analysis, linked mathematically/logically and recorded and/or transmitted.

In a navigational system for generating route recommendations and for target tracking, a system () is proposed, which detects vehicle-, traffic-, and/or driver-related data and which from these data can derive patterns of behavior of the user. The patterns of behavior as well as the user preferences derived therefrom can then be used to apply individually adapted optimization criteria to the specific user in calculating the route. When patterns of behavior are detected that deviate from the usual behavior, the detection of sensor information can automatically be expanded in order, in a plausibility check, to establish causes for the deviations and to derive therefrom new user preferences, if appropriate.

A method of route planning in a navigation system, takes place in three steps. In a first step, a quantity of first travel routes is determined on the basis of an optimization criterion, and location-independent and situation-specific user preferences derived therefrom. In the second step, the first travel routes are recalculated in sub-segments on the basis of location-dependent and situation-specific user preferences. In the third step, the determined travel routes are prioritized on the basis of at least one rating criterion. The intermediate results obtained may be displayed for the user after each step, so that the user may select one of the routes if necessary and thus end the method early. The operating behavior of the user and/or the way in which the user follows the route recommendations may be monitored and statistically evaluated, making it possible to customize the rating criteria and user preferences for route planning.
