An electrophotographic recording material comprising a conductive support and a photosensitive layer containing a photoconductive crystalline substituted metal-free phthalocyanine compound and/or mixed crystals of said substituted metal-free phthalocyanine compounds with unsubstituted metal-free phthalocyanine, wherein said substituted metal-free phthalocyanine compound represented by general formula (I) defined herein contains a halogen, nitro or cyano substituent, and the major part by weight of said substituted metal-free phthalocyanine compound and the mixed crystals of said substituted metal-free phthalocyanine compound with unsubstituted metal-free phthalocyanine is (are) present in the X-morphological form.

Metal-free phthalocyanines in the .chi.-modification substituted in up to four ortho positions can be prepared by tetramerisation of a reaction mixture consisting of phthalonitriles substituted in the 3-position with phthalonitrile in a molar ratio of 4:0 to 1:40 in the presence of a base and subsequent heat treatment at temperatures of between 100.degree. and 300.degree. C. They constitute excellent organic pigments.

This invention relates to a process for preparing asymmetric isoindoline pigments of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is an electron-withdrawing group, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, or aryl, and R.sup.4 R.sup.5 R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are independently hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, or aryloxy. The process employs an initial reaction of a 1,2-dicyanobenzene with an alcohol in an organic medium in the presence of a base. The resultant imino-isoindoline intermediate composition reacts without isolation with a cyanomethylene compound NC--CH.sub.2 -R.sup.1 to form a partly condensed product that is then condensed, optionally without isolation, in the presence of water with barbituric acid or a derivative thereof to form the asymmetric isoindoline pigment.

This invention relates to a process for preparing asymmetric isoindoline pigments of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 is an electron-withdrawing group, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently hydrogen, alkyl, or aryl, and R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6, and R.sup.7 are independently hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, or aryloxy.
